Post ok to let the revs hold back the car?

fyi, im almost always in ss mode

on a rare occasion, i'll leave it in first, rev up to about 4k or so, then come to a rolling stop. and the revs hold back the car drastically. obviously only when i want to move up a bit. is that doing any particular harm to the car?

its a real attention getter with the intake

That's called torque braking, and many people do it with manual shift cars. 18-wheelers do this going down hills as well.

More wear and tear on the engine, but nothing more than plain driving hard. It'll reduce wear on your brakes, too, but I'd assume that this means you drive the car hard always. Just stay on top of your oil changes and you should be fine.

I think that is one of the reasons they took the 1-2 shift out of our control on the 2000. Engine torque braking is pretty much OK in all gears except 1st.

No, I think they eliminated it from the newer ones because people were putting their car's in SS(read: old people) and not realizing this and driving the car to redline without realizing it(my mom did this to my car when she drove it for the first time)... they figured 1'st and second gears are more than enough at speeds for the street before someone realizes they put it in SS..who knows? I'm just figuring..

i like having the control of the 1-2 shift, so i am glad i have the 99. i dont torque brake in first, but i do shift it into 1st as i finally slow to a stop even though the automatic kicks in and does it right at the end. It gives me immediate response to get going again at a light.
should be no real difference than downshifting to slow in a manual, doi it all the time. wears a bit on the tranny too, so change fluids regularly as Gomez said.

Torque braking? Yeah... I do that too. Especially when I'm speeding down the frwy and see a cop on my azz... I downshift instead of braking.

I thought the reason is this: a person could downshift into 1st gear, lose control of their car because of the sudden engine braking, and sue Acura.

The dealer that I bought my car from said that they took 1st gear control away because the torque was higher at lower RPM's and that under normal driving the car was in 1st for such a short time that people would just do more damage by leaving it in 1st for too long. I have a '00 TL and wish I had control of 1st, but I'm satisfied with having a 5 speed tranny instead.
