oil selection?

I have an '02 TL-S and I have been running Mobil1 Full synthetic 5W-20 in it since I bought it with 86k on it. I now have about 143k on my car and. Coming up on another oil change. I know our car's recommend to use 5W-20 but I can't find any high mileage full synthetic in that weight. Should I continue to use the Mobil1 full synthetic 5W-20 or should i switch to the 5W-30 full synthetic high mileage?

Royal Purp 10w20 is fine though. No need to change viscosity. You can just use what you've been running.

^ I wouldnt run 10w20, and Royal Purple

There is no need to switch to a high mileage oil, especially since you have been running syn in it for so long. There is also no need to change to a higher viscosity.

I imagine since you Said there´s no need to change viscosity I was like??

To ADD If Anything to OP I would Switch to Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Syntethic, Instead of High Mileage Oil! It runs Year wide and its just 1-2 bucks more expensive x quart.

I haven't seen any 5W-20 extended performance full synthetic. I've only seen the 5w-20 full synthetic, which is what I have been using. Where is the extended performance found? I typically get the 5 qt jug of Mobil1 5w-20 full synthetic from wal-mart for $25 and the Mobil1 filter from Advance or AutoZone.

Any particular reason why? I don't mind using 10W30 in summer and 5W20 in cold Canadian winters.

There really isn't a huge difference between regular synthetic oils and high mileage oils. What exactly do you want the oils to do for you? Extra protection? Just change your oil regularly and you'll do fine. There are higher quality oils, but for most applications mobil 1 and other synthetic oils work well.

You arent gaining anything from 10w. You are effecting your gas mileage ever so slightly though using it. Stick with the 5w20. Its just fine to use year round.

There is quite a difference in protection between regular and syn, especially on longer intervals (i run 15k intervals on my tl with M1 EP). Plus in cold climates syn protects better, especially on initial start up.

Hey guys, I like the idea of a once a year oil change .....such as with the "M1 EP", but what about filter changes, just once or twice during the 15k interval ?????

If only once, what is the best brand filter of choice ? ~Thanks~

My 02 TLS has 165,000+ miles on it. I run Mobile1 EP 5W-30 & Mobile1 EP filer. I change my oil once a year, usually around 12,000 to 15,000 miles driven a year.
Oil still looks good when changed, and the engine burns no oil at all, I do not have to top off between changes. I feel a little better running the 5W-30 than the 5W-20 because it gets so hot around here, we have more heat than cold.

Lots of good info here:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/
My take-aways form the article:
1. Synthetic offers superior protection, especially at start-up. And it lasts longer.
2. External air temperature is not important - your thermostat sets the operating temp for the engine.
3. Thinner is better, meaning 5W20 is superior to 5W30, according to the charts and discussion.
4. Drive gently until the car warms - cold oil offers limited wear protection.

I changed my Filter Twice before but now I stick with 1 Filter x Oil Change... I Did not saw much benefit (Visually) from using 2 Filters on the same Oil Change.

But I would not Recommend using just 1 Filter, Its just what I Do.

And I Use K&N HP-1004 Filter which in Construction is Similar to Mobil 1 EP Filter.

iv been using the gold bottle of Castrol edge 5w-20 for the past 2 years on 1 year oil changes - 8k miles with Bosch distance plus filter. Switched to Mobil 1 5w-20 and the engine is running considerably smoother, cranks over easier and runs quieter. It appears the Mobil 1 has better flow characteristics than the Castrol. Ill see how it goes for another one year oil change, but it seems like the Mobil 1 5W-20 is a better choice.
