Oil Change Question

Those of you who are changing your own oil:
Are you putting in the recommended 4.7 quarts or are you dupming in a full 5 quarts. Those of you who are putting in 5 any negative side effects??

Thanks

A third of quart shouldn't be that big a deal. However if you see air bubbles on your dipstick then you have too much oil.

A little less is better than more.

I run mine at the bottom of the dot . . . . and less when at the track . . .

Too much will rob you of HP . . depending on whether these car's crank churn in the oil or not.

true, plus more oil increases pressure in the engine and can cause damage.

I put in the 4.7qts. It can be a little tricky to determine that on some quart containers. I agree with RUF87. 3/10 quart is no big deal, but a little less is better than a little over to me.

What I do is that I pour about 1/4 to wash it out, then I pour entire 4 bottles + whatever is left on the last bottle. So, that would be 4.75 qts.

5 quarts now for 178,000 miles and no side effects, and you wont have any with adding 5 quarts

if any thing not enough will cause just as many issues. it could lead to starvation durring cornering which is bad for a engine

Yeah, I was about to point this out.

If you drive enthusiastically and take a lot of turns at fast speeds (or even accelerating and braking hard), the g-force will push the oil to the outer side of the engine, and it will starve the other side of the engine of oil lubrication. Obviously this is an extreme case, but I do drive my car hard and it makes sense for me to be safer than sorry. This is why cars like the new M5 have hydraulic oil pumps (capable of more than 1000 PSI, apparently).

Having said that, I run just about 4.6 quarts on M1-104 and when I feel like running M1-105, I run 5 quarts. The bigger filter will decrease the oil pressure, so it's good to compensate by adding a little more oil.

Bottom line is, I keep the oil level on the dipstick slightly above halfway.
