Oil change question
Oil change question
My car is about 3000 miles right now and I was wondering if I change my oil, when my car hits 7500 for service do I have to take it to the dealer? what do they actually do when you bring it in for service.
I personally think bringing the car to the dealer for oil change is waste of money. On top of that, you don't even know what kind of oil they're using.
I do my oil change every 5K miles using Mobil 1 synthetic oil with Mobil 1 filter.

You can always ask what kind of oil they use. I will ask when I take mine to the dealer for an oil change.
The only reason I am taking mine to the dealer for one is because they are free
For the first 25k miles anyway. After that I'll do it myself more than likely with Mobile 1 synthetic oil. Probably use the Acura/Honda filter. I don't think the Mobile 1 filter has a significantly greater value for the price.

I like to think of it this way, No one else will put the care level into their workmanship that the proud owner, ie. myself would. I also like to check out everything else while i'm down there.
I just took my car to the dealer (~ 4800 miles on it) they said for Houston to use the servere conditions schedule... Just a FYI. My oil was dirty and Houston has a lot of stop and go. Unless you have a beater, I think severe qualifies.
I usually buy my own supplies - 5 quart jug of Castrol Syntec ($20 at Wal-Mart) and a Bosch oil filter ($6 at AutoZone) and take it to a shop to have some kid put the car on a lift and do the work for me ($5 labor only). Took me awhile to find a shop with labor that cheap, but I end up only paying $31 for an oil change, get premium oil and filter, and no dirty work done myself.
A lot of dealerships will let you bring your own stuff too (Sterling McCall in Houston, for example). I do this when I have to do the B, C, and D items in the Maintenence Schedule.

Acura should give you the first 2 oil changes free. I get a few extra free ones from the dealer 'coz of referred customers. If I specify Synthetic, they charge me extra so I just buy my Mobil 1 whenever I find it on sale (usually at Wal-Mart) and bring the jug in with me when it's time for the oil change.
When my freebies are done, I'll just probably do it myself, but I will still get it dealer-serviced (on scheduled stuff) for the records.

acura is too cheap on the complimentary servicings. i only got my first 2 (& cheapest ones) free. my 3rd visit was the 24k km semi-major servicing and that was a couple hundred. i think audi gives you something like all free servicings in the first 5yrs. now that's what i call treating the customer well.

I was rather surprised, I figured Acura would have more care. Yeah I heard BMW does free oil changes while the car is in warranty. Maybe even free maintanance all together.

Doing your own oil change is fun ( well for me anyways) and cost effective.
I strongly suggest not to use Castrol Syntec . ( unless its the 0W30 made in Germany). Following many discussions on a engine oil news group, (I'll get to the point) Syntec and a few others are not regarded as a good choice/value.
Mobil1 / Amsoil / Redline are good choices, as are many others brands.
Just my .02c worth
