Oil change question

I just had my engine flushed and the mechanic asked me if I want to switch to synthetic oil. He claims the only time that you can switch is after a flush.

Is that true?

Also, does synthetic oil prolong engine life?

How many miles do you have on the car?
What year what style?
If you do a search you should find the info you are looking for, But for the most part many here have switched to synthetic oil after the first oil change

My car is a 2000 TL with 86K on it. Runs like new and just got a new tranny.

It looks like you have a '00 TL, well this is not necessarily true, but is not going to hurt to flush all your old and regular oil and then put the new synthetic oil. Maybe that's the way this particular shop do it so later on if something happend, they can pinpoint the problem and don't have to blame the other oil. Hope it makes sence.

Well, most of us here switched without doing a flush, however, most of those people had low mileage cars... example.. I switched to synthetic at 4200 miles.

On a high mileage car like yours it makes sense to flush the old oil, so I wouldn't say it's too far fetched....

you wouldnt necessarily need to flush it. after a change or to it would be about as fluhed as t gets. when switched at 100k i let it drip dry basicly for an hour or so then filled er up!

It's all about the deposits on the engine from the dino oil. At 86k it's best thing to have it flushed.
You've got a good mechanic.
