My SRS light came on a while ago, and the code was ODPS sensor fault (I think 15-3). I reset the code, and after a week or so it came back on. I put off doing anything about it because I didn't have time to work on it.

I just got my airbag recall done by the dealer, and they quoted me $800 to replace the sensor (cost for the sensor itself was something like $550 or something). They also said that none of the airbags in the car would work while the SRS light is on.

So, wondering what my options are. I'm planning on fixing it myself, so is the best option to buy the part new? I read there was some kind of issue with this sensor that was covered under an extended warranty, so if I can snag a used one from another car I assume it would likely go bad again? Are brand new ones redesigned to last longer?

Has anybody replaced theirs?

Not sure where it's located or how to replace it though.

 

It's in the passenger seat, and it requires disassembling the whole seat.

Actually now that I look at the link, I'm pretty sure there is a distinction between the ODPS "unit" and the "sensor". That link appear to be the unit, while the 15-3 code is "Faulty OPDS sensor". The sensor comes as the seat back cushion.

Also, I messed up the acronym in the OP, it is "OPDS" (occupant position detection system) not "ODPS".

I think I was right on the bubble when mine went out shortly after I got my TL, but Acura still replaced it under warranty. But, that was about 4 years ago....

 

Anybody know if this sensor is common among different Acura models? I see some on eBay for '02-'04 RSX.

 

FYI ended up buying a new one from 2002 Acura TL PAD, R. FR. SEAT-BACK (WITH OPDS SENSOR) - (81127-S0K-A71) - Acura Parts Online

 

So now that I have the new part (seat back cushion w/sensor installed) I need to take the seat apart and replace it. Has anybody taken the seats apart before? Is there some kind of toolkit for getting the leather upholstery on/off?

Hog Ring pliers are the tool for opening and closing those round clamps- they are cheap at hardware store or place with auto upholstery tools/supplies- maybe even autozone

Next option would be a real upholstery person- look on Craigslist in motorcycles or boats for sale- keyword search upholstery Find ad for person who used to work for big place and now works from home! for half the price
Take in the seat- they easily remove cover, drop in the new part and reinstall cover correctly- without damage

You will need to disconnect battery neg cable before starting to remove the seats!!
Make sure you know the radio security code- and navs if equipped.
