Does everyone use high octane?

I know the engine probably runs smoother but I was just wondering if they occassional tank of 89 octane would hurt the longevity of the engine?

There are a lot of depends in that question.

Depends on:
Where you live, geography and topography.
What kind of driving you do. city, cighway, hills, towing, running up the RPMs

These all may have a bearing on what's best.

In a shortend response. As long as the engine doesn't "ping" then you are not doing any harm to the engine. Depending on your driving habits and conditions mentioned above, you may experience a loss in gas mileage and or performance.

Again, there are serveral variables that can effect the minimum octane needed to prevent engine damage. The there is a point at which more octane will provide no additional benefit.

Sorry that there is no easy answer for you.

As for me, I always run the minimum octane recommended. On the TLS that is 91. Since 91 is hard to find here I use 93 exclusively.

If it's cost that you are really concerned about you can always blend it yourself by alternating between 89 and 93. Try no to let the tank run below 1/4 and you should be fine.

I run 89 octane most of the time and can't tell the difference between 91. I have run 2 tanks of 87 an no prolems. The computer resets to the octane you are using.. I just decided to ru 89 as a good happy medium.. Not worth the difference in price for 91 or 93 ;however it doesn't cost most dirvers that much more to run the premium fuel..
