i have the check engine light on.
are scanners expensive.
is it easy to read the scan results?.
what version do i need(there are versions of OBD right?).
will pepboys scan it?.

don't make me take it the dealer!.

 

most auto parts stores have scanners and do free readings for you (you have obd2)

 

You can get cheap ones for like 50 bucks, I think.

But there are high-end ones that can monitor all kinds of data in real-time display, and control functions from the scanner. I think Snap-on makes one for 2,000 dollars.

 

i just want to know why the CEL is on.
maybe i can fix it myself.
or at least know something before i do take it to a repair shop.

 

get davis driveright ex..it plug in you ObD thing and you first drive it around for a hr so it can read and get all the wrong things den check it and find wat wrong and fix it and den reset ur light.

Just drive to an autozone, they will usually pull the code for you for free.

 

Yep. Thats where I took my car to find out that it was a clogged/restricted EGR valve.

he said it was my gas cap.
so i re-set set my gas cap and the guy from Advance Auto Parts turned off the code.

CEL is off.
if it comes back on...then i don't know..

 

Usually if there is something really wrong, then it comes instantly back on.

Let's hope it was just the gas cap, yeah?

 

That's probably not a gas cap code. It refers to your evap canister system. If it comes on again, either the canister is bad or there's a leak in a hose going to it.

 

dude anytime the code comes on just take it to autozone and bring a credit card

they charge you 180$ to use the scanner, but its fully refundable once you bring it back....they even do the same with tools

this is likely an emissions problem.
and covered under warranty.
i am going on vacation early next week.

think i couild drive it like this for awhile?.

think it needs the IM cleaning?.

worth a try, but unlikely its the problem if its not coming up with the P0401 code
