Non Navi to Navi conversion log
This will be my log for the tablet mod in my 03 TL-P.
I have had my TL-P for a year now and it is fully paid off. Which means time for some changes. I have already done my recent maintenance(180k miles) such as valve adjustment, spark plugs, egr, brakes. Recently I stumbled upon the tablet navigation mod thread and decided to go for it. Upon looking on craigslist I found a Nexus 7(2nd gen) tablet for $75. Jumped on that in a heartbeat. Went to my local junkyards looking for some w/navi bezels and climate controls but came up empty. However I found some great condition TL-S black marble trim for $4.99 that I could not pass up... Looks great with the tan interior.
Yes I know... She needs a cleaning.
So I ordered the w/Navi bezel and climate controls from eBay for $77 shipped which is a little much but not too bad. THEN I find out that the cluster bezel does not have the hazard switch included. Off to eBay again... $24 for a switch..... Ridiculous... Bought it anyway. In the meantime I have been experimenting with different software and wiring on the tablet. I have a 140w inverter I plan on using to power a 7port powered USB hub to a homemade USB OTG y cable which I have already made. My father had xm radio installed in the car before so there is a cigarette lighter plug underneath the dash by the ODB 2 port that will be the power source. For audio I plan on using the stock head unit that my father already upgraded for grom Bluetooth and USB iPod control. I plan on using either the Bluetooth connection or a USB DAC for audio.
A lot of people use a rearview camera on their tablet setup. Being a PlayStation modder(for a hobby) myself I decided to step it up a notch and install a fully working ps3 into my TL, that is going to be a video capture nightmare(That however is a story for another post lol).
Other things include OBD2 to USB setup on the tablet for torque, as well as a 250 GB HDD for movie and music storage.
Also need to figure out a brace for this. Might source this to a fabricator or go with 3D printing. Any one who has done this mod please share your ideas on a brace with me please and thank you.
I plan on updating things along the way as I get parts in.
So far I have:
Nexus 7 tablet
USB Otg y cable
250gb HDD
140W power inverter
Hazard switch for w/Navi bezel(arrived 1-4-16)
w/Navi instrument cluster bezel (shipped awaiting arrival)
w/Navi climate controls(shipped awaiting arrival)
Other misc. Stuffs.
Things needed:
Brace for tablet.
Felt for tablet
USB OBD2 cable
USB hub.
Video capture for PS3
Other misc. Stuffs.
Thanks for reading my wall and keep checking back as I will be updating as things go on/arrive.

There's my OBD2 port. Right in front of my accelerator.
There is a cigg plug under my dash here.
that's where I'll get power from.

Found out I can't process a claim on it as there was no insurance. Found another on eBay and ordered it. Hopefully it doesn't happen again...

Yea I'm hoping that if they realize that they will just drop it back off but if not I will have another on the way. If it does get dropped off the new one can get returned thankfully.

So here is an update to those with me still. I have been having some issues with my otg y cable. It would not work with my USB hub. Decided to order a premade one and it arrived yesterday. I'm still having some issues but have not been using Timur's kernel yet. I got it last night but have yet to install it. I have gotten a lot of stuff working but still have minor annoyances.
Also I'm putting a claim through eBay on the first climate control system. I had buyers protection apparently the new climate controls should be here tomorrow. So that's also good.

This will be the last update before install post. Install date is estimated for 1-15-16.
I swung by my local shop today and finished up the brace. So here is a quick teaser.
Its in!
Cheap mount. Works great though
Just waiting on a new car charger for the tablet. I ordered the one previously mentioned in this thread. I am going to wait to install a ps3 in but I do have an easycap already. Didn't realize it was supported. I'll give you guys a picture heavy post of the install next time I am on

Well... Here we go. This is it...
First thing I did was rip out the old bezel and switches. But I don't have any pics for that... Next I had to take out the radio to take the card tray out.
While the radio was out I relocated the climate control harness so I can access it for the w/ navi controls.
I attached the new climate controls to the radio and slid it back into place... Then realized something...
How the heck do I get the face place back on at this point?! So I had to get creative and get the faceplate on before the climate controls... Don't have a pic of my creativity but here is that finished
Its on!!! And my radio still works
So next went the dash bezel with tablet already to go.
Initial tests are good!
Slapped it all together and........
Its in mostly... Unfortunately the brace broke off the bezel as I was putting it in. It was also catching on one of the pressure clips... Sooo tablet fell out...
This is how my car is right now.
I don't have the bezel completely secured so when I go to remount it I can just disconnect the switches and pop it off again... Can't do anything til Thursday as thats my next day off.
But that's how my day went yesterday. At least most of the work is done. Just need to get the tablet in and I'll be done!

So I thought about using gorilla tape(makers of gorilla glue) and taping the back up real good. Also I killed my radio a little somehow.. The backlight does not work on the LCD anymore and my CD changer cycled for like 2 minutes when I reconnected the power to the radio but doesn't work at all now.
I can live without the CD changer. But I need the backlight fixed anyone got a fix for this?

try giving it a few good whacks and shake it while its starting up after a fuse pull.
(pull the fuse too so it relearns the servo positions - i think thats how it does it if its stuck somewhere when the power is out and not at a limit switch).

Held eject and load at the same time and the CD changer reset itself. That works fine. As for the backlight I'm just gunna leave it for now. I don't even look at it because I use Bluetooth all the time anyway. I'm just glad it is just a bulb and not a whole LCD that needs to be replaced

Been awhile but its pretty much done!
Sorry if it blurry... Since I'm going through Bluetooth I am able to use my steering wheel controls to change songs still. All I need to figure out now is the torque setup.

Indeed. I am really enjoying it. Also found out the hard way that if the hazard switch is not connected, turn signals don't work(had to drive around a week with the bezel removed)

That is correct. I do recommend a Right angle OTG cable though as I have a clearance issue with the straight cable. One of the pressure clips is too close to the cable so it prevents the bezel from being installed fully. I am going to leave it though as it allows me to easily pull out the corner where the power button is if needed.

I am using Co-Pilot currently however I will be switching to something else as it is pretty delayed when switching from a different app. Half the time it wont lock on to me after a switch but if I quit the app and reload it locks on right away.

Can you please post the links for the cables you are using. I'm also having charging problems. Thanks
