Noisy Power Steering Pump
Noisy Power Steering Pump
Hey guys, I've got an 02 TL Type-S with about 160,000 on it. Recently I noticed the power steering pressure hose was starting to leak at one of the crimp connections.
I replaced the line with a Gates one, which I felt was one of the better brands I could get from the parts store. The line fit great and everything is fine with that. I bled the system by turning lock to lock a couple times and topping off the reservoir.
Now ever since I replaced the pressure hose, my pump has been whining. Its not super loud, but definitely wasn't making noise before.
Could the pump happen to be on its way out now? I've tried rebleeding the system a couple times and it makes no difference. I'm at the point where I'm about to just spend the money on a new pump because its driving me crazy.

Try replacing the inlet o-ring. It's the single most common cause of noise and/or foaming on a wide range of hondas. They commonly show symptoms if you get anywhere near the inlet fitting. Get the improved design at any honda or acura dealer for less than a buck.
Thanks!
Went to the dealer, picked up the seal. Replaced the old one. Seemed to help a little bit. It's weird, the noise seems louder inside the car. You don't really hear the pump outside unless you hit full lock. Its almost loudest if I put my ear up to the steering wheel

At full lock they it will make some noise but nothing to be worried about.
Have you changed the fluid? if not consider changing it out but only use Honda fluid for this or it may cause issues.
Get a video of it and post it here.

From my experience some P/S Fluids don't like our pump... STP and Honey will make noise in the system... Honda and Autozone branded won't...
Know this from my days when my high pressure line was leaking so I had to be filling the reservoir every week, don't tell greenpeace! Most of the fluid leaked in my garage anyway

I need to look at my o-ring as well. I've owned my '00 TL since March and I haven't done anything with the P/S system, but I've noticed (especially when I cold start it) it has a bit of a whine to it, and it didn't have that when I first bought the car (used). Glad the o-ring seemed to help you, I'll look into that on mine.
Check to make sure the hose or any part of it isnt touching the strut tower brace or body anywhere. If it is it will transfer the sound into the car.
Also did you loosen or replace the belt? If so it may be too tight.

did you do a FULL FLUSH to dry? as per the owner book and factory service manual?
that's from the return line at res to a gallon jug
place cardboard under wheels for reduced effort-
Engine RUNNING and pump out ALL the fluid going full lock to lock- not close- all the way!!
then refill and start engine, add as its sucked in while turning full lock to lock
Do this all two times in a row if system has never been flushed (60kmiles per book)
Use genuine Honda PS fluid in my opinion- the ps likes it for certain!!
that oring and hose end is a popular failure

iirc you peel back an edge of the RUBBER BOOT on end of steering rack under car
if fluid is present you have a bad seal!
did you already ck the o-ring at pump to hose connection? that likes to leak and sucks air into system too- a double bonus of trouble!
