Noise from Tranny

I just want to know does your TL make clicking noises when changing gears?

Heres an example

P>
clunk
R>
clunk
D>

When chaning the gears it sounds louder than other cars. Should I worry or is it just me.

Once I was worry because the engine made a tic..tic...tic..tic...tic rythm sound, but when compared to my friends TL it was the same. So, it ended up being the natural sound of the engine.

I'm not trying to scare you. But, if your car is over 15,000 miles and you have already changed the tranny fluid.... Your car might have a tranny problem in the near future.

My car does the same thing!!! Only in [P] to [R] to [D]...
So far my tranny has held up real good... The noise does bother me.

When I go from Reverse to Drive sometimes it takes a quick second... (barely noticable delay)

I asked the dealer about this and they said it was normal. They said it was the tranny engaging and disengaging. I guess we have a more sophisticated tranny than other cars, so maybe that is why it is different.

But like you all, I worry about it as well. All I can hope for is the best. But if it does go, I hope it goes within the warranty period.

You sure you want to say sophisticated? I think my tranny is a dumba$$. Its NEVER in the right gear. I can slow down to about 4 mph and crawl and the car will still be in third gear. Then, if I have to accelerate a little bit, it doesn't move because it's trying to pull in third gear. I have to press down pretty hard on the gas to get it to downshift. By that time, the car in front of me has stopped and when i let go of the accelerator, its back in third. I think my tranny has an IQ of 30. Also, a $30k car should not make a LOUD clack when you put it from drive to reverse. It sounds like someone smacked my car.

Actually, I remember reading some posts on IS300.net about people hearing clunks when shifting from P. You might want to go and do a search b/c I searched a while back when deciding btw TL-S or IS300. I think that it's normal to hear a clunk when shifting. I heard it on my old Ford Explorer and that transmission lasted 95,000 miles. Just my $.02

Disable TCS to see if it still does it.

Well my tcs is always off

I was under the impression that it engages even when it is off (2000 model). Lets say theres water on the road, when you floor it the light flickers as your car does a mini burnout

I'm not talking about the noise, I'm talking about the quick second like it was quoted.

Don't know on 00's but 99's if it off is off.

Does this happen to you...

When you park your car and put it in P>

take out you keys
10 secs later

a CLICK from some where around the gear box

it's like it Engages some thing....

Most likely the shift lock. maybe 10 seconds later is when you removed your foot from the pedal. if yes then for sure is the shift lock, this would be normal.
