Hi Guys,
I live in nj in the bergen county, Bogota. Last night my wife was coming back from her job and one of the cop stopped her and told her to get the tint off the car, from the front windows. I really don't wanna take it off but i guess i have no choice. He didn't give her any tickets but did give her something that looks like a ticket.

Any suggestions ??

Any help will be appreciated.

the "ticket" is most likely an "Equipment failure" citation. Meaning not a moving violation, but just something illegal with the equipment itself. Kinda like a taillight out or similar. Not harmful to insurance. But I guess the tinting was either illegally too dark, or you can't have tint at all. It's gotta suck to take it off tho.. not cheap, and lets full light/UV in.. Sorry man.

That sucks.... those F*****G cops just want to give you tickets for everything... I had the same problem with my other car... got $300 worth of tickets just for the tint!!!
I took it off because couple more tickets like that and I would've gone broke...

How dark is your tint? and is it on the front windows or did you mean windshield ?

Always can just pay the fine and hope it doesn't happen again.

I've had tint in my front windows on my last few cars and only once did I get an Equipment Violation ticket for it (in lieu of rolling a stop sign so it was ok) I figured out that the ticket was like $80 and removing and reinstalling would have cost me more, so I just paid it. Otherwise, maybe one of the TL bros online are lawmen and may be able to assist. I've always had really light UV tint on the fronts, and gradually darker tints to the back, so it doesnt look all that tinted. To get pulled over just for that though really sucks. sorry man.

I have a 2000 Black/Ebony TL I have about a 51% tint all around because of stupid laws in DC. I have to go to Inspection every 2yrs so they will get you then. Police don't mess with you if its not to dark.

 

there is one way to get around that since tint is illegal in ny and nj.. if u have any good doctor friends, they can give you a letter that says you have a family history of skin cancer, and the tint is there to minimize the risk... otherwise u just gotta trust ur luck... but i've had all 3 cars i've owned tinted with 35%-20% and never got cited either in ny or nj for it... *knock on wood*

The legal limit in Colorado is like 35% but I have a friend who drives around with 5%. He tries to roll his windows down if he can during the day on one of our highways that are notorious for cops. Other than that, just drive carefully to not get pulled over that way your tint is not noticed.
Actually I think here in Colorado, the piglettos can have your car towed for illegal tint. Don't know how it is where you are, but I would be careful.

 

Consider yourself very lucky. My friend got pulled over for the front tint (45% I think) and he had to pick it off right there with his keys or else the cop said he would tow the car on the owners expense because it had improper driving equipment on an cannot be driven on public roads.

It was on a roadblock he got caught, so both or use were trying to pick the tint off while he was trying to pull over other cars over for other infractions such as light bulb colors, exhaust being too load, things like that. Must of pulled over atleast 5 or 6 cars while we were busily picking away.

I think 2 live crew made a song about the police...

I say screw it, I live in Hawaii and the law is 30% is legal. As you can tell I don't really care. 5%+30% and 30% on the whole front windshield. I hate when people can see inside Sorry no alternatives for me.

here in MN it's 50%...I don't know why but many people get pulled over if you have mirror tint, then they'll pull the light gun out on you...But no one really gets tint violations out here cause everyone and their mother out here has tint except me...Even the cops...

Well, this is bad news.... I was thinking of getting it down here with the lightest tint on the front side windows and the next darker on the rear side windows and then even darker on the rear window. When I moved here, my Lexus was that way. NJ wouldn't pass it but I should have gone to a private garage for inspection. I had to remove the tint with ammonia and 2 hours of scraping. I think the law has something to do with the police not being able to see in the car. I like the idea of getting a Dr.'s note tho because the back of my hands show years of sailboat racing in So Cal. Thanks for the info.

 

See if you can work a deal at the tint shop that did it for you. I've had friends that had to have it peeled and replaced 3-4 times cuz of "fix-it" tickets from bored cops. The shop may peel it for you then replace it for a discounted price after you get the ticket signed off.

I'm telling you guys, you can get away with the tint, but it can't be too extreme. In states that are very strict on tint i suggest going with tint 35% or higher. And for those with ebony interior its going to make your window tint look darker, keep that in mind.
My tint is 35% but it looks a lot darker because of the interior(check the sig).

It took me a long time to get the cash together to finally buy a car I'm in love with. (2000 Tl Black, no/navi)so I really don't want the tint. I want people to see ME in the car!!! As a cop I can tell you that if you get pulled over for tint and your polite the chances are you'll be driving away with a warning and nothing else. Most cops, when they pull over someone for tint, are looking for *******s. If you're not one you've got little to worry about. Greg
