Nitrogen for your tires?

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Yesterday I was watching the news and they did a segment on this. A local tire place for $25 will deflate all your tires and put Nitrogen in them, and then you get a free lifetime of the tires inflation to the correct PSI.

Pros:

-Nitrogen doenst expand and contract like air does, so the PSI wont change with temperature.
-Nitrogen leaks through the tire at a much lower rate of speed then air does.
-If the tire is low you can mix it with air until you can reach a place to put all nitrogen in your tire.

Cons:

-Most gas stations dont have Nitrogen fill up stands.

I was wondering if anyone here has actually tried this? I want at least try it but my tires need replacing soon so I dont see much of a point. Has anyone even heard of this?

and then you have to go to Costco anytime you may need a presrure adjustment

For the normal human it doesnt do anything to improve mileage or tire wear

For racers and those who think they are race drivers- it does help in those extreme tire temperature conditions

I keep a 12volt compressor in the garage and when the temp makes big changes I adjust my tires at home

I had my tires filled with nitrogen - until I had the A service done. Dealer rotated tires and left 34 psi in the now rear tires. I went back and they said they inflate to 32 psi for all TL cars - even S types. Anyway I went to Discount Tires and they filled tires to 35/32. I now have a mix.

Nitrogen does expand and contract, just maybe not as much.
Also, there is no moisture in the gas (unlike compressed atmosphere).

VQ: How do you like it compared to regular air?

01TL: Good point that would be a pain and like I said it early it was a con because that would get annoying.

donc: How does your car do with a mix?

bibledriver: I do understand that Nitrogen does expand and contract but they made it sound like it was basically so little you wouldnt be able to notice a diference.

Not as well as the nitrogen by itself. More temp rise as I drive.

Most people get it because it's usually a fill and forget where you don't have to worry about your tire pressures...

And thats bad!!! It takes away the human element of checking your tires on a regular basis. You may have a nail with a slow leak and if your on the fill and forget , well thats not good. Like said before, for the normal driver there are no real benefits, other than not having to adjust it as much, but then you have to worry about bringing the car in for service and having them readjust your psi or mixing regular air in. or having to find a place tht has nitrogen when you need to adjust them.

i duznt ride differently with nitrogen, but i notice on the tpms that the pressure stays relatively stable, and that i have to fill up my tires with nitrogen less often then i had to with air

Good tires really require little maintenance. Filling of a tire often is an indication of either it being so old that it is leaking through cracks or that there is a puncture somewhere. If your tires require frequent filling then check them out at a tire shop.
It is good to periodically check tires, old addage says "at every fillup." Maybe I don't check mine that often, but with lo pro tires where it is harder to detect leaks visually, checking is important. Underinflated tires get heat damage.
Air, Nitrogen, Dry air . . . Whatever pleases you. Just check them often.

Sorry, I worded that wrong. I meant I didn't notice a difference. I didn't see any increase in fuel economy or anything else "special" mentioned in the brochure. But my techs said it was free to employees so I made the switch.

you wont notice a difference in mileage either. Where you would notice it is if you never checked your PSI. With AIR it varies and if low your hurting mileage, with nitrogen it doesnt vary and you stay normal. BUT if you checked it often like you should you should never be low or affecting your mileage.

Nitrogen isnt a miracle gas that does all sorts of things to your tires like the techs make you believe.

In any article you read about Nitrofill it says it increases tire life and gas mileage. All I'm saying is there was no difference. I'm not saying Nitro is a miracle gas. Nor did I ever. I just have it in my tires.

It does, but you know how it does it?? It does it by keeping the PSI at a stable PSI. It doesnt fluctuate like air. The exact can be done with air by checking often and adjusting the ties properly. There is nothing in nitrogen (other than it bing dryer ) that makes them last longer or increases mileage. People need to be aware of how or why they claim it does what it does.

I know exactly what and how it does what it does. All I said was I didn't notice a difference. Get over it. Who cares. Everyone knows that you know everything about cars. You don't have to prove it by arguing with me about pointless BS.

you stated that and all i was trying to do was clarify (mostly for those who dont know) why they claim what they do, and its not something you should be able to "notice"(unless you dont maintain your car and your psi is already low to begin with).

Id suggest cooling it.

I'm sorry if I'm getting a little heated. I really enjoy this site and don't want to be banned. It just seemed as if everything I had to say, you came back at me in an argumentative state. But then again it's hard to interpet someones tone in text. I'm all good if you are.
