Post NHTSA Opens Official Investigation on CL/TL Trannys

Here is the excerpt from the article:

"Opened an investigation into 2001-2003 models of the Acura 3.2 TL and 3.2 CL because of 35 complaints about transmission problems that can cause the cars to quickly lose speed and come to a stop. Two crashes and two injuries were reported. The NHTSA estimates that about 265,000 of the cars are on the road."

If you want to get your voice heard... keep filing complaints through the NHTSA... especially if you had a tranny failure at highway speeds.

Here's the link at NHTSA for filing a safety defect report:

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/proble...Q/VOQ/voq1.cfm

I would recommend doing this if your tranny has dropped gears unexpectedly.

I just filled out the form. I suggest everybody with tranny problems to do so as well. If they do a recall, our resale value would definitely go back up.

LOL. I just got my warranty extension 100,000 miles. Still on my first tranny 15,400 miles. :-)

I hope they can find the problem and fix it for 2004.

Someone posted this on the NHTSA.GOV website. I particularly like the last statement.

Component: POWER TRAIN:TRANSMISSION:STANDARD:MANUAL
Summary: I AM A NERVOUS WRECK WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 ACURA TL TYPE S ON THE FREEWAY FOR FEAR THE TRANSMISSION WILL FAIL. I WILL NOT ALLOW MY WIFE TO DRIVE THE CAR AND I WISH I DID NOT HAVE TO DRIVE IT EITHER. HONDA SHOULD RECALL THE CAR OR BUY IT BACK AT LOW BLUEBOOK. SHOULD I OR MY WIFE BECOME INJURED AS A RESULT OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILING WE WILL HOLD HONDA LIABLE FOR ALL PROPERTY DAMAGE, MEDICAL BILLS, PAIN AND SUFFERING. IF YOU DO NOT FEEL A RECALL IS WARRANTED, I MAY SUE YOU AS WELL. MR

I filed my complaint. I too, had my car downshift into 2nd at 65MPH. Almost became the hood ornament of an Escalade. Not too mention that the Escy driver was really "pissed" at me.

I hate the fact that we have to do this. I didn't like filing the complaint, but after my dealer put this on my work order...

I wrote letters and filed complaints with anyone (people or organizations) I could think of.

Not yet. I just gotthe notice from NHTSA asking for my permission to share the contents of my complaint, as well as whjo it came from, with Honda/Acura. So I signed that and sent it back. Of course I want them to know about the complaint.

I did get a note from the attorney general that said they are looking into the matter. But we'll see what becomes of that.

There are only 3 dealers in Metro Detroit. But a guy on a-cl (who bought his car at the same dealer I did) told me he took his car to another dealer for a failed tranny. He has springs, CAI, and headers. The dealer gave him no problem, gave him a loaner, fixed the trans, and never mention the aftermarket parts. So if my second trans fails, I'll dirve a few more miles out to that dealer and get ti taken care off.

Hey Rock,

it looks like they aren't going to replace another defective tranny due to your performance mods (per their NOTE below the work order... ) what's the deal w/ that?

Exactly what is a 'suspention modification', I don't have one of those, nor am I aware of how to modify one.

Its a wonder they can find their way out of the shower in the morning..... of course that's making the assumption they know what its for...

I was as shocked as you guys. I'm not worrying about it much. My first tranny lasted 28,000. The lease will be up before I hit another 28k. If I do loose a second, I'll have to deal with a lwayer and Magnusson-Moss and so on.

Suspension mods is in reference to the Comptech Springs.

Since they are only looking at '01-03 I would suggest you 99-00 people get on the horn!

****. My family just picked up a 2003 TL-S. The dealership told us the transmission problem was fixed for 2003. If something goes wrong and anyone in my family gets hurt, I will beat the **** out of everyone at the dealership and call the family lawyer.

ARGH!!

OK, according to my dealership, the tranny problem WAS fixed for 2003 models, except for the first ~5200 for the '03 model year. There will obviously be failures on trannies on any car, so maybe it really was fixed for '03 (after the first 5200).

Oh, and I was one of those 2003 TLS tranny failure victims....build number 1832.
