Newbie with a few questions on a newly acquired '00 TL

Hi all,

So, I just got my second '00 TL. (Got the first one in 2000 and sold it in '03 : due to some unavoidable circumstances).

This time around its a whole new ball game as this one has 145,000 miles on it. The transmission was rebuilt at about 136,000 miles, so it is running a new transmission which seems to be pretty stable. I just got the car checked before buying it and apart from a few minor maintenance issues, there is nothing wrong with the car. It has been well taken care of with regular oil changes and other maintenance on schedule.

I have a few questions:

1. One of the things that came out of the inspection was that the motor mount (the one closest to the bumper) is end of life and needs replacement. Is this normal? Is there something else that I need to be wary of and get replaced? What is the typical parts+labor for this job?

2. What other preventive maintenance should I be doing? I am planning to buy mangefine filters for both the transmission and P/S. However am unsure what grade.. 1/2" or 3/8" or 5/16"

3. Anything else I can do to ensure that my grandkids and inherit this car in a running condition from me (my eldest one is still 5 yrs old ) ?

Front engine mount.

Part Number: 50800S0KA82

Labor to install about 1,5 labor hours.

Dealer discounted price $159.12 (MSRP $208.82).

I recommend you replace all mounts that's torn. The car will run really smooth with new mount(s). Money well spent.

Click on the link below for maintenance ideas. The cars are different but have similar service requirements.

Its more important to change the atf with Honda dw-1 (also the external filter)
and flush ps with honda ps fluid

Find out if tbelt and wp were done at 105, probably not!
was trans actually rebuilt by a shop or what???

the front motor mount is very common failure- every 50-75kmiles is not unusual between breakage! Can be DIY with a few basic tools and floor jack
Dealer should be no where near your new baby

remember to register as owner with `acura care` and ask if all recalls are done, a few newer ones exist on the airbag system
usa cars call 1 800 382 2238 x5 for a human, need cars VIN in hand

scroll down the main thread section titles and subsection `problems and fixes` for everything to watch for
Cleaning the door and sunroof drains etc can be found there

Looks like the timing belt and water pump were replaced at 130,000 miles. I will remember to use Honda liquids for all fluid changes. CarFax does not mention any recalls due. But I will check with Acura tomorrow. I will remember to do the recommended stuff in the problems and fixes.

Will try to see if I can do the motor mounts by myself

Any other "watch outs"?

Here is the service history in the recent past:

141,000 - Oil and filter changed
Front brake rotor(s) replaced
Brakes checked

136,00 - Transmission replaced and serviced
Oil and filter changed

130,000 - Maintenance inspection completed
Camshaft seal(s) replaced
Crankshaft oil seal(s) replaced
Water pump replaced
Timing belt replaced
Front brake rotor(s) resurfaced
Induction system serviced
Oil and filter changed
Brake fluid flushed/changed
Front brake pads replaced
Air filter replaced
Transmission fluid changed

122,000 - Oil and filter changed

115,000 - Oil and filter changed

108,000 - Oil and filter changed

100,000 - Oil and filter changed

94,000 - Oil and filter changed

86,000 - Oil and filter changed

75,000 - 75,000 mile service performed

I have another question - The car currently has Yokohoma Avid Touring-S P205/60-R16s on all 4 wheels. The front 2 are near 20% and so will need to be replaced. The rear 2 are at about 60% so I can stick with them fro a while.

In such a scenario, will I need to go only for P205/60-R16s as replacement for the front tires? Can I change the profile for the fronts? Any recommendations? The car will mostly be used only for city driving and will treated with respect

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions.

looks like you scored on this one! the big service completed and only a few oddball items like trying to resurface the rotors, then replacing them soon after = as long as you have good brakes and the pads are fitting the rotors,,,good to go!

the front motor mount and anything else you need to do is well documented in the DIY section. We can coach you thru about anything,
Noted you had induction service which is cleaning the intake BUT doesn't note EGR system cleaning- that's internal to the intake manifold and needed every 75kmiles, not found in the mait schedule, real world discovered this one!

Tires: if you like the tires you have, you can keep the tires you have,
If buy 2 put them on the rear of car = where traction is most needed in turns.

Off brand names (see tire shops on Craigslist) offer good quality for half the price
My 01 runs Forcem tires which- according to the installer - are made by kumho
They look right in tread design, DOT test ratings for wet traction (AA) treadwear and work fine as hard as I care to push them. (see race driver license)

what do you want- lower profile? that's the aspect ratio of tread width to sidewall height.
at 60 the tire absorbs a lot of road bumps, 50 and lower are much stiffer sidewall and loss of softness

Don't go wider than 205, or loss of mpg is in your future
Its your street cruiser, leave it alone on suspension parts and tire sizes

acura knows more about recalls and the newly issued ones- than carfax!
Give the dealer or the 800 people the vin and they can look everything up

any more info on trans replaced, record shows replaced and serviced??? odd

you are ready for a valve adjustment, that's the right time for egr cleaning as you remove the intake manifold to access the valve covers! two for 1 labor~

are you familiar with Seafoam? a cleaning product for engines that goes in gas tank (or oil) = makes things inside shiny like new

Hi all,

Thank you for all the informative responses. I have finally got around to ordering the parts. I am looking at the following. Please correct me if I am doing something wrong. Also, is Amazon a good place to order the motor mount?

Mount: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00GJJ174Y

Seafoam:
Amazon.com: Sea Foam SF-16 Motor Treatment - 16 oz.: Automotive Amazon.com: Sea Foam SF-16 Motor Treatment - 16 oz.: Automotive

I now have a new issue and a few questions:

1. How do I use Seafoam? Do I just dump the 16 oz can into the gas tank before a tank up? Is that all I need to do or should I do anything more?

2. I will get to the DIY for the engine mount in a week, but what are the tools I will need for it? I am not very handy and this will be my second (the next issue will be my first) DIY on the car.

3. Looks like the passenger side low beam is busted. I will need to replace it. I just ordered a 6000K kit - Intense White D2R 6000k HID Light Conversion Kit | HIDeXtra
I am looking at the headlight replacement DIY - https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...5/#post9056124
But this is for only the HID. How do I replace the ballast? I couldnt find the DIY for that. Am I missing something?

Thank you all for your help once again.

dealership

no one knows that car better than the dealership, everything you want to do seems logical & i think your best bet is to take it to the dealer & explain to them what your looking for, your gonna pay for it but thats what you get for taking good care of your car, i cant imagine parts being too expensive for a 2000. I cant see anything wrong with a bad motor mount at that mileage. What if it was never replaced? did a good job for 15 years.

seafoam buy 2 cans
add 1 can to gas tank when just under half a tank = 8 gallons
that's the 2 oz per gal max dose allowed by maker
after another tank or two put 2nd can in at just under half tank
You are now done!
midyear- at oil change time you may want to run a half can in half tank for maintenance dose, use other half in the oil before change

there are several threads on the headlight replacement, and on the hidextra kit specifically. Look in diy section and in main section or problems and fixes area,
scroll down thread titles, low beam out is a frequent posting = never far from top of the list
search for post by me on seafoam or hidextra and that will answer most questions

Cleaning TB air plate is separate job, use carb cleaner or deep creep- seafoams aerosol version
Replace PCV at this cars age and miles $20 at dealer for the more accurate one
10 bucks at parts store for unknown accuracy

NO need for dealer on anything small for the TL, and most every job- we can make small!
If sometime you manage to stump the band on a drivability issue- then the dealer might have insider info,,but,,, we have some dealer techs on here that keep us informed

so ck out the main diy section and search for info

Has your brake fluid been flushed in the last 3 years? every year is preferred with 3 years max! that's a reminder to all as the summer fun driving season approaches.

the front and rear mounts are vacuum boosted and oil filled = high price!!
Failure of front mount every 75kmiles is not unheard of
Many go much longer, then discover the side mount broken from taking excess load
ie: broken front mount
Luckily its a plain rubber type and more in the 50 dollar range

The engine mounts in these cars are a wear and tear item. They typically go out eventually especially on high mileage cars. We actually have awesome sale pricing on engine mounts for these cars right now. $249 for all three!

Excelerates are custom solid poly mounts
they wont break again but do lose some smoothness in exchange
Great for racer types who are using the throttle frequently

There will also be more vibration with the more solid mounts. They typically break in over time, and become less harsh. They are are strong mild steel and designed with quality and performance in mind.

Check out my last post on this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...issues-892616/

I ordered mine from the same place you did yours. Your ballast won't be the same size as the old one nor will it fit in the same spot. However, everything plugs in (until you plug it in to the power supply from the car, then you will need to either cut wires, or check my post for an alternative) and there is plenty of wire length to mount it. In my post I stated I placed it under the headlight bracket but you actually will block one of the bolts. It now resides inside my bumper beam. If you have any confusion or questions feel free to PM me or reply for everyone else to see

Congrats and best of luck on your new car!
