New Transmission and Gas Mileage?
New Transmission and Gas Mileage?
Has anyone noticed a difference in gas mileage after a tranny replacement? It seems like im getting worse mpg after the tranny replacement? anyone else?
I don't think the gas milage drop is a direct result of the tranny replacement. (except in dougbert's case where he may have lower shift points). I am guessing that the timing of your tranny replacement coincided loosely with the gas companies issuing their fuels with their Winter additives which often times adversely affects fuel milage. Just a guess on my part......who knows.

Except, my shift points seem higher. I can hit 72-3mph in second, about 119mph in third...It appears to be hitting the redline just barely over 7k rpms if I wound it that high, but the dyno plots indicate the fall off around 6850...
Go figure...

Now that you mention it, I sort of know what you are saying. My replacement tranny also has a slight delay in going from second to third which translates into the rpms creeping past the prime shift points for optimum acceleration. Only 2nd to 3rd though, the other shift points seem the same as my original tranny. Hmmmm what can you do.....stupid Acura.....%$#@!
the shift points are determined by the computer, not the tranny. unless you got your ecu changed there shouldnt be a difference. i had mine swaped (on my 2nd failure) when honda was using that as a fix also and my only shift point to have changed was the 1-2 shift. it always shifts 3-400 rpm short of the redline

Question about ECU I will appreciate your response
Hi
I have following questions, I will appreciate your response :-
I got my transmission replaced in Oct-04 from Sussman Acura. After the change of tranny, I see the shifting of gears are taking palce late...I mean the RPM zooms up to 2000 to 3000 RMP at 20-30 MPH. Also, my gas milage went down like crazy i.e 90 miles for half tank (8 gal)
I talked to Dealer and as per him, Acura made changes to ECU and that's why the RPM goes up and this is Normal.
IS IT TRUE WITH ALL OF YOU, WHOES TRANNY IS REPLACED?
Also, Do you think be'cos of this gas milage went down (My thinking is :- To get in to speed ECU generated more power results in to more RPM which in turn requires more Gas to consume) DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS ?
Also, any suggesstion to make gear shifting smooth as it was before tranny replacement?
Thanks in Advance.

I was told by the technician who replaced my tranny a few weeks ago that they did raise the shift points and made the shifiting more quick. He mentioned that the smooth shifting is actually the clutch packs slipping and this generates heat. (funny, I was talking to him a week after I got my car back as he was topping off the fluid in the tranny. It seems they neglected to fill the tranny up all the way...it was 1 qt low! - geeze, now don't ya think that might cause excessive heat too????)
Wouldn't it be nice if Acura would actually fix the problem in the tranny causing the failure as oposed to band-aiding it by tweaking the shift points.
I guess the name of the game is to keep the tranny going until 100K, then 'it ain't their problem.

I will say my tranny shifts smoother after the replacement rather than before. Especially the 1/2 shift where the old one would chirp the tires hard when I moderately accelerated. It always did that for over 30k miles. The new one only does that with a smoother shift if I absolutely floor it...
If your car is shifting harder, I would take it back.

drop in mileage its very doubtfull a small increase in rpm for the shift point wont do that. i drive hard (as most on this forum know) and im consistantly at 200 to a half a tank mixed driving.
What would the dealer say if.....
Just had a thought.....
What would the dealer say if I went to the service department and insisted that my ECU be set back to the original specs that I purchased the car with. My position being that I purchased a car with certain shift points and a certain smoothness that my car no longer has. I never requested that they change my ECU and by doing so they have changed the inherent characteristics of the way the car drives.
What do you think they would tell me? Would they change it back for me?
