New TL Type-S owner with question

Just picked up a Black 2002 TL Type-S last Saturday. What an awesome machine. I have one question so far. When I originally took it for a test drive, I was able to squeal the tires in the shift into 2nd gear. After purchasing the same car, I've only been able to do it on one other occasion. Is there some trick to get the TL Type-S to shake its tires loose on the 1st to 2nd shift?

Thanks in advance. And thanks to the mods for putting up this forum. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Try turning off Traction Control (TCS).

welcome aboard

umm you should take your car easy you know? for break-in purposes

but the squeal could've come from worn out tires, VSC off, or slippery surface, at worst, maybe a misaligned car :p

Thanks for the info, guys. BTW, I bought the car with 9,000 miles on it already, so it's pretty much broken in. I think the trick is to throw it into gear around 5,500 RPMs. By the time the gear actually makes the change, it's pushing 6,500 to 7,000. I also tried leaving it in automatic and push into neutral for a second around 6,000 RPM, then dropping it back into drive. That produced a lengthy chirp.

BTW, I don't plan to frequently drive it like that. I had a 2000 Buick Regal GS before this car. The front tires were bald at 10,000 miles. The transmission went bad at 38,000 miles. I've learned my lesson.

pardon me... but i don't think that's the best way to drive a car..? :wow:

anyways, take it easy, the car is a luxury sedan, not a top-fuel dragster now :p

I am no car expert, but...

doing what you are doing (no matter how many miles) cannot be good on the car.

If all you want is to get some scratch, then buy a beater, rev the engine in neutral and then slam it into gear. You will get the same result and your wallet will be fatter.

I agree... especially with "our" tranny history...

Going back to my original question, I think it's completely dependant on road surface and grade. And I just realized that the computer shifts into 2nd on it's own whether you're in Sportronic mode or not. I suppose that means that I have no control over the 1st to 2nd shift wheel chirp.

That's correct. The computer has total control for when it shifts from 1st to 2nd.

And people wonder why their tranny is failing. If you drive your car like that your's will be next.

Actually I need to change that statement. My wife graciously allowed me to drive her 03 TLS today and I learned that you CAN control exactly how long the car stays in 1st before you shift to second. I did this by taking the shifter through the gates all the way to the bottom then to the left of the 1<->2 position which places it into 1st gear. As you accelerate it should stay in 1st all the way to red line (I only went to 5500 rpm's) until you push the shifter to the right side of the 1<->2 position which places it in 2nd gear.
