New TL Owner

Just picked up a 1999 TL for my 17 year old son and 16 year old daughter to kill. It's black, so it wears all it's beauty marks proudly but with 150K, a new timing belt, and no signs of tranny issues I couldn't pass it up for the price.

I have always been a DIYer, so even if the worst happens and the tranny blows tomorrow, I'm sure a 06-07 Accord swap is well within my wheelhouse.

So far the car's only issues are the passenger side power locks not working, SRS light on, and the inability to reset the tripodometer.

I will try to wear out the search function before bothering anyone with silly noob questions.

Congrats on your purchase! I have some bad news regarding the AV6 transmission:

The AV6 can't be used with the 1999 seeming the 1999 has a 4 speed where as the 2000-2003 has a 5 speed. I could be wrong, but that's what I've gathered from my time on the forum.

But with that bit of bad news, there is good news to follow:

The 4 speeds aren't nearly as problematic as the 5 speeds. So it is a lot less likely that you'll have problems with it compared to the 5 speed.

As for the SRS light, unfortunately I'm not too savy with the SRS system, but I do know in most cars if the SRS detects a fault, the system is disabled. So that means incase of a crash that requires airbags, they will not deploy if the SRS light is on. I'm not 100% sure if this applies in the TL, but I know that applies on most cars.

Good to have you with us on the forum. It is a treasure trove of knowledge!

Thanks for that info. That would explain why there's a 1999 TL on my local Craigslist that a guy swapped in a motor and tranny from an 2001 and he can't make it run. Sucks to be him.

I have read some posts here and there about the procedure for resetting the SRS light involving either a yellow or a green connector that may or may not be near the fuse box that if you stand on your head just right and jump a couple terminals while turning the key on and off while doing the Hokey Pokey within 4 seconds of turning said key, the light will go off.

It sounded to me like the best course of action was to pay the dealer to reset it and hope it doesn't come back on.

I drive an Audi A4 so I am no stranger to random warning lights, but at least with it, I can just plug in my laptop and clear any codes out in under 5 minutes.

Pulling the clock fuse will only work for the "CEL".

The SRS reset procedure is in the "DIY" sticky and does indeed require going under the dash and doing a bit of "hokey pokey".
Better than paying a stealership a diagnostic fee. .....maybe even a dosey down doe or two !!!

Figured out why the trip button doesn't work. It's not plugged in. There is a homeless wiring harness hanging there but it doesn't match the plug in the trip unit.

Hmmmm, it appears as though somebody was behind the dash panel. That may also explain what caused the SRS light to come on.

If ya are good at "DIY" stuff on your cars, download the Acura factory service manual. It'll be of great assistance when doing the tricky and more complicated repairs. Good luck with the TL and your teenage drivers.
