need your help comparing MPG
Hello all,
I know this topic has been discussed many times, and several people had came up with various ways to check rather "accurate" MPG using your bare eyes and simple math.
I've been getting an okay MPG (think around low 20's -mostly city driving) but now my MPG is way under 20 mpg.
On Friday I filled her up at this Exxon station (1.699) which came up to little more than $23 (less than 14 gallons), then I drove around as usual; no racing, no nothing. I noticed that the needle took a drop on Saturday. When I checked yesterday the needle pointed the half mark.....guess what the trip meter was showing?
110, yup it was reading one hundred ten miles since that fill up.
I think that comes out to be plus minus 15 MPG!!!
I know I'm not driving A Ferrari or Bentley, but the gas consumption surely reflect those gigantic V-8's or even V-12's
I need your help, to see what the normal MPG is for "half-the-tank" (from full-full to center/middle mark on the tank meter).
So, could you guys please press the RESET button after filling her up and then post your miles when the needle hits the mark? I understand there will be some differences, but those differences should fall under +/- 5% of total MPG for half-the-tank.
I'm thinking half-the-tank is around 7 gallons, and if you are averaging 25mpg, you should get anywhere between 150 to 200miles.
Thank you very much fellow TL-ers!
p.s. luv my car

I have a mix of city and highway driving. I usually get about 350-400+ from full to empty (I would get more but I love VTEC). I don't know the tank capacity of the '99-01 models but the 2002+ is 17 gallons I believe. When I'm at half a tank its usually in between 185-210.
I fill up 93 and always BP Amaco.
Change your gas station, that could make a difference. If that doesn't help then attend this problem with the dealer.

The next time your gage starts to read 1/2 tank.. fill up,,, I'll bet it's a lot less than 8.5 gal. the gage is not a accurate measure of gallons. Example; when you reach "E" it's not empty..
yes ive been gettin really low gas mileage and i jus go thte car a few weeks ago. filled up one time, 14 gal, and i had only gone 240miles. wtf up /w dat??? tru its mainly city driving but still. the gas light usually comes on around 230-250 for me, for the first 3times that i've had to fill up. currently at bout 1000miles. i do do alot of 4or so rpm starts, but i thought i would atleast be able to get 20mpg. o well, im not gonna start drivin like a granny cuz of this. too much fun!!!

My car gets 24-25 mpg consistently, 80-85% Hwy driving. Your theory about a half of a tank is not really valid, everyone will probably have different results.

I typically get 25 mpg - about 200 miles off 1/2 tank doing about 75% highway.
I did get 29 mpg on a trip to Atlantic City a few weeks ago - cruising at 75 with the AC cranking.
Check your tire pressure - it is the main reason behind low mileage - and check all 4 tires.

on a vtec fun ride i hit about 125 at half tank on my gauge and on conservative i hit 150 and 180 at best but then again im a teen still (lead foot) and california highways are just as bad as stop and go so....its hard to apply highway as a factor when its still stop and go...
i been geting 23 mpg at the best so far

I usually go 20 mi before the needle is exactly on 'F'. Then, there are 9 ticks to the midpoint and 9 ticks to E. I usually get 20 miles per 'tick', so that at the midpoint I'm at 20 + 9*20 = 200 miles. Then I'm at 380 miles when I hit 'E'.
This works out to 27-28 mpg.
All of this is in optimal conditions, though, such as when I've only commuted to work (nearly all hwy) and haven't run the AC much. In city driving I barely get 20mpg, and using the AC drops me down to the 25-26 range. Still, no complaints, that's hella good mileage for a car with this much power & space.

Honda/Acura gas gauges are renowned for their inaccuracy, keep watching the needle when it gets to that half way mark, i wouldnt be suprised if it goes back up some. I typically hit halfway around 175 miles, and then by 250 the "empty" light comes on. the most gas i have EVER put in the car was 15.3 gallons, and the gas gauge was below the E mark at that point even though there were stil 1.7 gallons left in the tank...
this week i got roughly 17mpg due to all city driving and heavy traffic
i was like geez when i filled up the tank today
38 liters on only 270km of driving
haven't been that bad b4...usually i get 22-24mpg

Thx all for your inputs. I guess it makes sense...getting under 20mpg on CITY driving w/moderate traffic and A/C...Oh I forget that I drove around some time to look for a parking spot...guess that adds too.
125(lowest) to 210(highest) miles on half tank is a huge difference. Wow...I didn't know driving style can make such a huge difference on MPG...almost double!!!

I did a check last week. Mostly highway driving I got 24.5 mpg. Cruising on freeway about 80 mph. No a/c but all windows down and sunroof open (higher Cd). My biggest problem with mpg is my right foot!
