Need help purchasing '02 TL-S

Hi, I live in NYC and will be purchasing a 2002 TL-S within a week or two. The lowest price I got was $30,300 @ Park Ave Acura in NJ. But I really don't want to pay over $30k.

How much did everyone pay for their car (before taxes)? Which dealer?

I'm willing to travel up to 200 miles to buy. BTW-how does the process work? I'm planning to pay all cash (well certified bank check). Park Ave Acura told me that the wait is about 4-5 weeks. When should I pay them in full? How much is required as a deposit? What should I inspect when the car arrives?

Thanks so much for any replies...This is my first new car purchase...so I'm kinda nervous.....

BTW-how much is everyone paying for insurance? The cheapest rate I found was about $4,400/year with Geico ($2,229/6months).
They're killing me...i'm only 23, single, male....but the thing is, I have a perfectly clean record for the past 5 years. Have my license for 6 years now. Been in a minor fender bender 5 yrs ago and got caught speeding @ 65MPH!!!!!!! in a highway in Brooklyn! (also 5 yrs ago). Other than that I'm clean.

But I'm not nuts.......I'll just put the car under my dad's name....insurance for him is $1,900 year (10+ yrs with a clean record).

Damn, living in NY sucks!...sigh. Sorry, I got carried away.

You really need local prices. I paid $31,999 for TLS with Navi. I paid cash via check and had to wait 2 weeks for the car. They don't care, along as it clears, so don't expect a discount! But, I didn't give them a nickel until the car was delivered and was ready to pick up. I was willing to put no more than $1,000 down if they had asked. I'm 33 with a good driving record and have 100/300 insurance coverage with Farm Bureau for $750 per year. Good luck

Yes. Living in NY can be expensive as far as Insurance Goes.
I work at a prominant Insurance Company and I know that it doesn't matter your record when living in a city like NY. Theft , population , vandalism and so fourth tend to run up rates.

I'd consider moving to a less congested place... Maybe a surberb ??

Anyway , sounds like a pretty decent price , especially if it's w/Navi. Even w/out , still sounds pretty good.

I put a down payment of 1K for my dealership to hold my car. I'd think they'd take any amount over a couple hundread bucks to hold one for you. They also shouldn't care about the cash deal since they make more dough when you finance from them . .. Their lease managers make Xtra money when skimming a point or two of interest. I think you're doing the right thing with the cash. Try not to pay more than 7 1/2 % though. You can always get your dad to co/sign the loan , unless of course , you just have the $$$.

Park Ave Acura has an excellent reputation on this forum. There are plenty of members who have worked with them and might be able to help you out tomorrow.

$30,300 (w/o nav) is not too bad but should include some options. W/nav, it's a great deal! Again, there will be plenty of opinions tomorrow when the east wakes up again. Stay tuned!

$500 or so down is all that should be necessary to lock in your deal.

BTW, Welcome to the forum.

Cool

Put down no more than $500 as a deposit when you place an order and make sure it is FULLY refundable if you change your mind. Don't even think about falsifying insurance! If you insure the car under someone else's name, in another city (or any phony reason for a lower premium) and the insurance company finds out, you could be in big trouble depending on the laws in your state.

Thumbs up Montclair Acura

I got mine in Montclair Acura. Paid $30,000 even including the rear spoiler installed. Non nav of course. Purchased it on early April. PM me if you want further details. Good luck on your purchase.

Lightbulb

Purchased mine for $30k even with wheel locks and destination from Steve Patterson at Curry Acura. I bought it in mid-June, but it came direct from the factory, so I didn't pick it up until July 30th (with 4 whole miles on it!!).....

If you want to take a little drive up route 95 you can get one in Southern Ma. for the price you want to pay. I paid 31.2k with nav and a couple of dealer options, and the dealer said the 2 thousand for the nav was not negotiable, so I would assume you could get a non-nav Type S for 29 and change. As for the insurance..yikes!! I hear the headlights have been getting stolen a lot in the NYC area so maybe that has something to do with it.

gia, i don't know if your record will hurt you or not, but i did state farm and got a lot better than what they offered you, and i'm 23 too...and it's all in my name...but truthfully you're probably better off using your dad's name...

email me if you want my insurance company or dealer...

Post MasterCard For Partial Payment

Hint: I used my CitiBank AAdvantage credit card for a $5,000 deposit or partial payment on my TL-S. Got 5,000 AA frequent flyer miles and paid-off the CC balance on the next billing cycle (ie, no finance charges). On another car deal last year I was able to charge $7,000 on the card for a partial payment (for 7,000 freq flyer miles). Yeah I know, it won't work for everybody, but...........

I also have been dealing with Park Ave Acura. And they won't budge on $30,300. I'm hoping that will go down once the 2002 CL's start coming in. They're discounting the CL's like crazy now. So maybe by mid-September we could get a better deal. Any thoughts on that?

if you are making a down payment... i've heard that you should definitely use a credit card becuase it's easier to dispute the charge if the deal goes south.

I recommend going to Acura of Westchester in Larchmont, talk to Tobi and tell him that Silvio sent you.

As for insurance, I am using State Farm Ins and I am only paying $2,100/yr for full coverage & high limits (250/500 liability & 100/300 uninsured motorist) and I just turned 25.

Does anyone have a TL-S with the navi system? If you do, would you recommend it? Is it easy to use? I've heard about having to operate the radio/cd HVAC on the navi system on a lot of cars. Is this true for the TL-S?

Another thing....I think i read that the E-brake is NOT a handbrake, is this true? Don't tell me that you gotta use your left foot to activate the E-brake!!!! If that's true how am I going to go in a four wheel drift in the snow in an empty parking lot?!?!?

Gia,

It is true, the handbrake is actually a foot brake. I kinda like it like that, cleans up the interior.

As for the navi...I've got it and love it. The only thing you control other than the navi from the unit is the A/C controls. I find myself plugging places in that I already know how to get to just for kicks.

How does navi work? i heard it's a dvd right? would it save $$$ on insurance? how much is the annual fee? Are there other fees other than $2,000 you pay for it up front?

Any other opinion from owners with the navi will be greatly appreciated!

There are no annual fees, just the $2,000 you pay for it and then any upgraded DVD's thereafter. It will not effect your insurance either.

It's simple to use, I learned just by playing with it. Where in NY are you located, I'm in Westchester so if you ever want to check it out before purchasing let me know.

For an additional $1000 you can get the TL-S with Navi. I got mine for 31,250. Since the price of the Navi is usually $2000, it would make sense to go the addtional amount. I love the Navi, it sure was worth the money.
Most dealerships only require a $500 deposit to order a car and, in my experience, it has always been refundable. Believe me, if you cancelled, they will sell that car the minute it arrived. They are not taking losses on cancelled orders. Make certain you have all details in writing. Instead of ordering, see if they'll do a dealer trade with another dealership who may have your exact car.

I was hoping that it'll decrease insurance because if the car was ever stolen, they can trace it right away.

I'm located in Brooklyn, NY. I'll be on vacation the next week...so I'll be away from NY, the only time i can go to the dealer is on the weekends and the next "free" weekend i have is sept. 15. Thanks for the invitation, but I'll take your word for it.

Do you know how much the DVD's are? I just hope they don't charge you another $200-$300 every year.

So do you think $31,300 is a "fair" deal? Would you think the dealers will bite at that offer? I really don't want the trouble of negotiating the whole day with them.

SlyTLS, did they have the car in stock? which dealer did you go to? Acura of Westchester in Larchmont??? Thanks...

What was your the price you paid?

Just curious, which dealership did you go to??? The lowest quote I got for the TL-S non Navi was 30,300. And I thought you had to add an extra 2,000 to get the Navi. So That would bring my quote to 32,300. I would get the TL-S with Navi if I could get it for your price of 31,250 also. Thanks alot.

The Navi is not a tracking device like Lojack, it is strictly for directions. Although I'm sure if they gov't wanted they could track us with the GPS.

No problem, the invite is there...let me know if you change your mind.

You dont need to update the DVD every year, just periodically. I highly doubt that they are building new roadways constantly. The only thing that should really change are the store/restaurants. As for the dealer biting, it really depends on how pressed they are to unload the cars or for the sale.

I bought mine at Acura of Westchester in Larchmont. If you go there talk to Tobi, he's the business manager (and a friend of mine), tell him that Silvio sent you. I believe that his wedding is in Sept...not sure when though.

My car was ordered before I went on vacation so it was waiting for me for 3 weeks before I picked it up. The have quite a few on the lot and customer satifaction is big on their list so they will take care of you.

I would too! When are you planning to purchase? If we meet up and go together and get the same car, we'll definately get a better deal.....it's like giving the salesman a stone and when he throws it up in the air, not 1 but 2 birds will be on the ground.

He'll be doing the work for one but profit from both of us. I bet you park ave acura in NJ gave you that 30,300 right?
