Need help buying TL

I only can only afford a used TL, since my parents aren't helping me out. I've found a 2002 TL-P with 6500 miles selling for $20750, but I wanted Navi. So, there is a 2001 TL-P with Navi that has 23000 miles, but is selling for $25000. So, my question is do you think its worth getting the Navi or not?

Something is fishy about the 2002 TL-P..... I'd run a check on that VIN and look at the VIN's on the body panels to make sure they match and are in the correct placement for non-replacement. Kelly Blue Book doesn't have values for the 2002 yet, but to give you a ball park figure, a 2001 TL-P with only 6500 miles on it would get you about $25200 in Cali at a dealer when trading it in. Selling it privately would get even more, and then add in the fact that it's an '02 with a few new items and restyling. I'd say that they could probably get $26500 atleast upon trade-in, private resale is even higher yet. To me it sounds like there's something wrong with the 2002 because they could probably take it to a dealer and sell it (to the dealer without trade-in) for an easy $24k so why would they bother with $20750. Flat out the person is either a TOTAL idiot and hates money, or there's something wrong with the car. Buyer be ware.....

As far as the 2001 TL-P with Nav goes, that's probably a pretty fair figure. I'd say private sale value is probably somewhere between $24k and $25,500. If you'd like a really good assessment of value on the 2001, go to Edmunds.com, they've got a good true market value that'll help you determine true value based on options (nav), mileage, color, and location.

On the description of the car it does say "No Dealers". Probably my best bet is to go look at it in person and check the VIN like you said. Thanks

Well, both the cars are being sold by private sellers, so hopefully the cars check out. However, I still need to sell the car I have now, been trying for 6 months and still no luck...

For those who bought your TL used, do you ever feel "bad" when a newer TL drives by? Do you ever think, "Should've saved up more $$$ and got a new one?" That's what my bro keeps telling me, he's trying to talk me out of buying one. Just wanted to know how "real" TL owners feel.

Well, my mom will take a loan out for me from the bank, seeing that she has a better credit history then I do, (I'm only 20), and hopefully the rest will be covered by how much I can sell my car for. If I were to buy a new '03 TL, I would want to get the Type-S, but that's out of my league. I don't want to be a "slave" to my car.

Another question for you guys/gals...For those who bought a TL-P, do you wish you saved for the Type-S? Sorry so many questions, but just trying to get an idea. All I really want is a TL, but a Type-S would be that much better.

Well considering that when I was 20 I had a POS Mercury Topaz I'd be happy to have Acura anything. But I don't know what kind of neighborhood you grew up in and what kind of rides your buddies have.

Damn if I had an Acura when I was working at Six Flags I could have gotten just about as many ladies as that punk with the SC400 was getting. Atleast I got my share but I had to upgrade to a Beretta. Oh by the way, I only had the standard Beretta (with a 6cyl though) and not the GT. The ladies didn't care at all.

I'm now 30 and my wife has an '02 TL-P. We did not get an '01 for a few reasons. One was that it didn't have mem seats and that would have made just getting into it a drag for both of us (she's 4'11" I'm 6'5").

If I was 20 and single I'd probably go for a Type-S. Actually I'd get a CL instead of a TL because its cheaper and you only probably need 2 doors when you are 20. And maybe you don't want Navi because then you can't use the "I'm lost" excuse. When I was 20 I didn't really care where I was at as long as it was out of the house.

Another reason to get a CL is that the new ones don't look that much different then the old ones.

I'm not sorry I bought the TL-P, even though I could afford the -S. Even if I'd bought a TL-S, I'd be thinking about lowering springs and wider rubber, same as I am on my TL-P. The only difference is that now I've got that extra money to do those things with. Besides, though the -S folks will probably laugh, the TL-P, despite its (slightly) softer ride and 225 hp engine, is actually not a bad hot rod in itself (0-60 in 7.2 sec, but let's not have THAT debate again), and I drive the heck out of it--safely of course.

When I was 20, I had no car...but if I'd had my druthers today, and were 20, the CL would've been enough for me, too--I agree with doopstr, I didn't need four doors at that time. If you *really* want four doors, just buy a used '01 or '02 as per your plan, and by the time you finish college (making big assumption here that you're in college), you can decide whether it's worth it to trade in for a brand new '04 or '05 TL

I don't live in a great neighborhood, I live in Pomona for all those who live in Cali or know of Pomona know it's not that great of a city. I like the styling of the TL better than the CL, that's why I decided on the TL. I am in college right now and the TL should last throughout my last year or two of college. Only problem now is the person who wanted to buy my car is backing out, so I'm back to square one.

If anyone is interested in a '90 Benz 300E for $8K and your in S.Cali, lemme know

Thanks doopstr and neuronbob for the info and backing up my decision on a TL-P. Makes me feel like I won't regret it "if" I can get the TL still...

I went used on an 00 TL just because the color and price was real good. On second thought, I might have sprung for a type-S, but I couldn't really justify spending all that extra cash on a new model that would instantly depreciate on me. Then again, I am out of school and have a pretty good job, so I'm in a different position than you. Like you, I like the styling of the TL better than the CL. If I were you, go with a used TL because it will last you throughout your school and into your first job where you can make some real money. Then, you can go out and get a new TL-type S...you don't want to be tied down with a huge car payment. And at 20, a used TL is more than you really need. Good luck with it!

If you get the VIN number, I can run a carfax report on it for you. My account expires 3/27/02, so don't delay. There is something very wrong with it going for that cheap, unless the guy really has to sell it for one reason or another. Keep us posted though on what you find out.

Thanks for the offer. I tried calling the seller, but have not gotten an answer yet. I'll try to let you know the VIN in time so you could run that check for me. Thanks again

johnnyb_s check your PM

Well, the car was salvaged. The seller said it was just cosmetic damage. Only The right H/L, bumper, and fender were changed. I haven't seen the car yet, but what do you guys/gals think of a salvaged car? I guess it was to good to be true!

Ask for proof of the actual damage, otherwise, it coulda looked like this:

and been rebuilt -- and you'd never be the wiser until problems start popping up....

just so that u know..its very rare that an insurance company gonna totally write off a car because of bumper , fender and a headlight...it has to be a bit more serious.... i think for a car to be salvage these must be substantial damage done ...prob in the tune of atleast $10,000 ..but thats just my opinion
