Laser of the dvd unit needs cleaning? DVD needs cleaning? High/low temps of its environment messing with it?

could try just poppin the disc out and reinserting, might just be a disc read error type thing, mine does it about once a month. and this is all i do to fix since the discs are so friggin expensive.

Try a DVD cleaning disc. It has brushes on it that clean the drive. They're about $15-20 and can be picked up at Best Buy or Circuit City.

i had a similar thread, you can't really get the cleaning disk running though. Since it needs to be played like an audio cd for the cleaning to work. I personally believe, just putting it in doesn't do anything.

it may be a death warning on the drive unit
mine went out a few years back while under warranty
Ask the service manager- you 've met a few times now right?
Its possible to replace with some searching for the right unit online/ auto recycler yards- and one that HAS the correct security code for the unit--then it needs an updated disc $200

If all else fails- there are some really nice aftermarket stereo units that can fit in the screen space and have nav, get xm traffic reports overlayed on the maps like the new acura,
or a handheld unit for 300 will blow away the gen2 acura nav system

I dont really know what to do about it. I even opened up the disc and used rubbing alcohol to clean the laser of the drive. Didn't help much. Mine works half the time. I just have to restart the car for it to work.

Shoot, could always blow some air in a can through it. Couldn't hurt it at this point, just don't shake it while spraying; don't really want any moisture to get in there.

Sorry for the late, late bump. I just started to have this issue a few days ago. I have always wanted to update my in-dash nav unit with something nicer/better but I wanted it to fit in that space since it is easier to glance over to see rather then look down into the spot below where most people put aftermarket nav units. Can you make any suggestions on a unit? And what about the climate controls that are part of the nav system, like the A/C, fan blower etc.? I have read your lengthy, and extremely informative posts about doing work on your TL, so I know you know what you are talking about.
