Navi problems

Just picked up my WDP '03 TL-S Navi on Sunday! I absolutely love it, but one wierd problem with the nav system. When I punch in an address for the navi to direct me to, it will try to calculate it, but then stops and pops up a message saying:

"Route cannot be calculated, please try again from a different location."

Then the next minute I will hit enter again and it will go through. . . My problem is that when I'm at the dealer, it works fine so they really can't see the problem, but at home, it won't route me at all. All I get is that lousy message!! Has anyone else ever had this problem? I'm thinking it could be a bad disc or something. . .

Hmm... all I can think of is: If you were to bring up the "map view" on your navi, can you move the joystick from your house to your destination without going through "unmapped/unknown" areas on your navi screen?

In other words, are there any "blank" spots between your house and your destination -- that aren't there between the dealership and your destination?

Hopefully that makes sense.

Is your navi set to DIRECT ROUTE or EASY ROUTE?

Do you have any other settings turned on? i.e., NO TOLL ROADS, NO FREEWAYS, etc.?

How far are you from the dealership?

Which city in Cali are you in?

Vincent

Try switching to the map view and see if you have a good satelite link. Maybe the car don't know where you are at.

Gee, Vincent--you sure you didn't leave out any other questions? For a moment there I thought you were interrogating the guy...

Do you live in a housing development that was just created? Maybe the area you live in is so new that it's not on the DVD.

I'm in Bakersfield and I guess the city was just added in this most current update. I live in a pretty old area thats been around for at least 35 years so I don't think thats an issue. The wierd thing is that it has calculated a route to my house before and I know it can do it.

When I switch to map view I can move all over town and its all mapped. Everywhere I've driven is in town and very well mapped.

I've tried DIRECT ROUTE, EASY, MINIMIZE FREEWAYS, all of them and it still won't route for me. The problem occurs even when I have a full signal from the sky. (satellite in the top left corner is green)

The dealer is about 15 miles away and its in a flat part of town. The area where I live is hillier.

The strange thing is that other cars I test drove were able to route me no probs. I'm beginning to wonder if the gyro unit/reader in the trunk is faulty.

Heh, heh, heh... I guess it does sound like I'm grillin' the guy, doesn't it?!

It's an old work habit, I'm afraid. When our computer operators call us systems programmers for help we usually have to get to the real problem quickly -- and in only a few questions. Sometimes it doesn't leave much room for conversational niceties. I'll try to lighten up.

Well, I re-read your original message and two things stood out for me:
... but at home, it won't route me at all. All I get is that lousy message!! ...
Does it only fail at home? One mile from home? Two miles? etc.

AND...
When I punch in an address for the navi to direct me to, it will try to calculate it, but then stops and pops up a message saying:

"Route cannot be calculated, please try again from a different location."

Then the next minute I will hit enter again and it will go through...
So are you saying that when it fails at home and you try a second time it works?

If you don't feel like experimenting and finding out how far from home you have to be before your navi starts behaving... maybe your dealer can swap your disk out and let you try a different one. Since they really want you to be happy let them know this problem is dulling your happiness! They should be able to swap your disk with another new car on the lot. Just make sure you're getting the same version/release that you had!

Good luck!

I've already taken it to the dealer once and they reset the system for me. . . That didn't solve the problem so they said that if they have to, they'll drive a new car out to my house to compare the two.

As vperkins2 mentioned, there could be an issue with the disk itself so hopefully swapping out the disks will solve the problem.

And when systems programmers call (UNIX/NT/network) system administrators because the system/network/program is running too slow, us sysadmins wonder why programmers get paid as much as they do...

And they're probably wondering why you guys can't keep things working correctly!

Congrats on the TLS Scandal37!. I (actually my wife) have the exact same setup on our 03 WDP TLS and we love it. I have been very impressed with the Navi but have never experienced the message you referenced. I think vperkins2 is definately on the right track to venture out a mile or two at a time, shut the car down and restart to see if it will plot your course from that location. One additional thought, are there any environmental and/or regional factors that could cause a Navi unit to loose it's point of reference at your place such as a powerful magnetic field or large antenna arrays? In any event I think I would definately take the dealer up on their offer to drive another car out to your house and see of it can plot the same course. BTW, that's pretty good customer service!

Well to update everyone on the navi issue:

The dealer brought another TL/Navi out to my house and it exhibited the exact same problem as my car did. I felt better knowing that it wasn't a hardware issue as the other car did it too.

I contacted Acura of America down in Torrance and have been dealing with the Navi techs down there. They are trying to find a fix for the problem. I am now 99% sure that it is a software issue. The system works flawlessly up in the Bay Area and down in LA. With that being said, I'm hoping they correct the problem for my area. I'll also be asking for a replacement DVD when the new release is issued in September. . .

I wonder if it could it be that thermo-nuclear electro-magnetic power generating facility in your back yard?

Seriously, I think DBH has a point about interference around your house. Any possible sources? It seems that if it was the disk/software, the problem would be more consistent...

Good luck!

Well, I finally got a hold of Acura of America and here is the problem. Apparantly, the issue is software related. The area in which I live is NOT on the disc. Although the streets are displayed, when the system goes to calculate a route, it can't find the relevant street data.

So to try and compromise, they are going to give me the next revision of the DVD free of charge when it is released sometime in September. Hopefully this issue will be fixed in the next release.

Thumbs up

Excellent! I'm glad the problem was diagnosed and will soon be corrected! I'll definitely have to add that to my list of problems to remember.

I'm also glad your dealership was willing to try several things to get to the bottom of your problem. We hear so many "crappy" dealer stories that it's good to hear about a good dealership now and again! (I'm assuming you still think they're a good place to go for service...)

Anyway, let us know when you get that new DVD... we'll send you some blank ones so that you can make a few "backup" copies for your fellow Navi owners.

Later,

V.

So, THEY want you to be HAPPY do they? Well THEY don't like Navi problems, because they haven't a clue on how to deal with them. I have a thread running in this forum on my navi problems, and it is a continuing nightmare. They have had my car in their possesion for a total of 3 days now and haven't replaced 1 bit of hardware. To appease them I brought in my mom's 2.03 DVD so they could load it into my nav. They insisted that to do so they need to disconnect my battery and let the car sit for and hour so it dies. Then they said they would place 2.03 (mine is 2.05) in the drive and it would force a load of the software. I'm a computer tech, and this makes no sense to me, but they're Acura so they MUST :wow: know. They ran my car through a battery of tests again, but even though they've personally witnessed all the weird things it does, are now waiting for some type of approval to fiannaly replace something in the system. BTW when I got my car back at 5PM as I left I checked the version in the setup menu. 2.05 NOTHING CHANGED! They only succeeded in losing my radio stations, my chair memories and killing the express up/dn window (hey I didn't know that could be killed!) They fixed the window and I reprogrammed the rest for a second time. They love disconnecting the battery!
Am I going on a bit, sorry.
Oh yes, Good Luck from me too!

I read in a different post that there is a backdoor menu on the navi that will display how many satellites are tuned in, the configuration settings, etc. Does anyone know the keys to press to get into that menu?

It can only be done just after start-up (key-on). As soon as you get he disclaimer screen, touch the "OK" square. The following needs to be done immediately after accepting the disclaimer since you only have a window of a few seconds to do this. In the following order, press and hold the "Menu", "map/guide", and "cancel" buttons. Keep those buttons pressed and after a few seconds you should hear a beep and a new menu will pop up.

I just tried it again to make sure my directions were correct, and I pulled it up.

Be careful messing around in there, I've read where a few people have hosed things up messing with the calibrations.

Maybe you need to visit a new dealership ... or a therapist. :wow: But seriously, you can do the DVD swap yourself, I think. I haven't read your other thread (or I don't remember it at the moment) so I'm not sure what your complaint is. But if I run into non-answers or no-action it's time to go somewhere else, if possible.

Good luck,

V.

I'm close to that point but want to fully exploit the dealer I bought it from. They are close to home and that's why I bought it there. I tried the back door menu but failed. Is it press the buttons 1-2-3 and hold all or all together and hold. I tried the second and will go try the first choice now. My ongoing thread is near this one now.

To answer my own question it's 1-2-3 Hold all. That worked and I'm in. And sure enough there's a Force Download button which I presume will load and new software that's in the player at that time. Something the dealer couldn't figure out.
