Question Navi Problem...anyone else have this one?

My navi often thinks I'm exiting the freeway when I'm not, or doesn't know that I've taken the offramp, and keeps me on.

Also, sometimes I cross intersections and the Navi displays that I'm still approaching it.

Anyone else having these occurances?

It might be your tint causing interferance to the navi sensors.

It also happens to me once in a while. There are lots of different factors that can cause this and I DO NOT have METALLIC TINT on my car.

Sometimes the navi loses contact with the GPS receiver (satellite) and therefore it displays the wrong information. You can tell this by the little logo on the upper left hand corner of the screen. It should have 3 GREEN line meaning it is receiving the maximum. But if it turns YELLOW, that means there might be a lot of interference around that specific area and you might not get the right info. But after you get out of that area, the navi should correct itself.
I really think it happens to everybody's navi once in a while.

Lots of people readin', but not enough replies. Who's had these problems besides me?

GPS accuracy is like to 50 meters or so. It's not surprising that the navigation computer will misplace your position occasionally. The system also uses inertial sensors (gyro and vehicle speed sensor) to asist in accuracy.

I have had these accuracy issues before too, before and after my tint was installed. Thankfully, the system recalculates and corrects itself rather quickly. I doubt your system is malfunctioning.

I pick my TL-S w/Navi this week and if I have this problem, I would take it back to the dealer. That's not right!

I've had that problem a couple of times, but I didn't remember to check the GPS signal strength...will check that next time when that happens.

I have this behavior all the time. I posted here awhile back, and everyone seemed to think it was normal.

My wife just got a Honda Odyssey with the nav system. I haven't driven it enough yet, but I am going to watch and see if it works better. It's the same system, so if it works better than mine, then that would tell me there is something wrong with my nav system.

I've had that problem too.
What i do is use "LOCATION CORRECTION" function on Navi.
Try that everytime you notice the problem.

The dealer will tell you that this is normal...
this happens to me every once in a while, especially in office park areas with tall buildings or heavily wooded areas, but its no big deal...

OK, this question has been asked before... let's see if I can shed some light on the problem.

The Acura Navi uses GPS signals only to correct its position every now and then. For immediate navigation, it uses a vehicle speed sensor coupled with a yaw rate sensor which measures how quickly you're turning.

When your Navi is new, it needs to calibrate its vehicle speed sensor. The VSS signal is a pulse train, one pulse per unit distance traveled.

Now, your Navi also uses "Map Snapping" to snap your current estimated position to the closest road.

When you make a right-angle turn, the Navi is forced to snap you to the intersection. This helps the Navi calibrate the VSS. So, it helps to make several right-angle turns to prevent the Navi from leading or lagging as you drive down the road. You will only need to do this several times. Once the VSS is calibrated, the Navi performs quite well at all times.

As far as the Navi not recognizing that you're on an off-ramp, I'm afraid that is going to be a permanent problem. Because the off-ramp leaves the highway at such a small angle, the Navi often can't tell if you took the exit until you drive a little ways off of the highway. However, this happens less often when you're following a route. In any case, the Navi will recognize that you've left the highway when you make a turn onto the cross-street at the off-ramp.

Another problem that I had on my Navi was a jittery yaw rate sensor. That is, the car icon will be spontaneously turning left or right when I'm going straight down the road. There are two causes of this problem as far as I can tell: the yaw dampening rate and the automatic centering.

The yaw dampening rate can be adjusted via the hidden Navi menus (Menu-Map-Cancel). A more negative damping rate will reduce the "importance" of each sensor input, in effect smoothing out the inevitable sensor jitters. I adjusted mine down a little and my Navi has behaved very well so far.

The automatic centering algorithm slowly adjusts the "centered" voltage of the yaw sensor. The only problem is that the Navi software does this continuously, so that when you're driving down a long curved highway, the "center" voltage will slowly drift towards the current voltage. When you finally hit a straight stretch, the Navi will think that you're now turning the other way! It'll take it a few minutes to re-center the sensor voltage to the correct value. I hate this because I drive down a considerable length of curved highway every morning.

Anyway, I'm rambling. For now, just drive around the subdivision a few times, making right-angle turns every mile. You should see an improvement in your Navi's position estimate.
