Navi
The navigation is actually pretty good with directions (amongst other features) If you look closely it's also pretty accurate with the amount of time it will take to get to your destination.
As for a fee, if I remember the dealership telling me, you simply buy an upgraded DVD every 3 years or so around $40 bucks

Also the Nav system is upgraded each year in the fall. The DVD cost for the upgrade this year is $152.00 I am not sure what Acura is going to put in the new TL-S. The 2000-2001 models have DVD & the 1999 has the old CD-ROM disk that you have to get a disk for each region. The DVD on the 2000-2001 has a single DVD to cover the USA. The cost for the Nav is models is $2000 & thats it no fee.The Nav can be programed to take Easy Route or Direct Route ,No Toll Roads, Detour from Route. The Nav system can also save a location where the car is.Take for example a small town mall that an out of towner might be at all you have to do is push the Acura icon logo on the screen as long as the car is not moving & it will save that location to the memory. Then the next time you come to that town & you wan't to go back to that mall just punch it up in the save location. The Nav system also gives you a turn by turn miles to next manuver. The system also has a button to remove streets that you might not wan't to travel. The system gives you est. miles & time to your destination.
FTM-1: The 1999 models have PCMCIA hard drives (not CD-Roms) that are regional and are updated I believe quarterly by the Acura dealer. The first 2 years are free then you have to pay for each update after that. (I only know this because my friend has a 99 TL w/ NAV) The DVD is changed by the car owner and the Acura dealer plays no part in updating it. The update takes 10 seconds to change the DVD and about 3 or 4 minutes to initialize the new DVD. All your personal addresses and previous destinations are saved which is really good.
I just updated my DVD last week and I'm happy with the new version. It seems to load a little faster for some reason and has a lot more detail than the old version, at least for my area.

Sounds like it is to me. You'll be coming forward 4 or 5 years... I guess it's only worth it if the area you drive in has changed significantly in the last 4 years. I'll probably spring for a new disc next year since I bought my '02 TL-S in Sept of '01.
Good luck!
