My legacy of DIY projects is coming to an end...

The UR pulley set is sitting in my trunk, and after looking around the engine bay for a while, I realized that this is a project I do not want to take on myself. First off, I don't know if the air gun will be strong enough to take it off and put back on at 187 lb/ft of torque, not to mention there's not much room to work with.

So I have decided to take it to a shop. But the problem is that I don't trust Godspeed anymore after they screwed up my car, and Payne Tech is backed up for months after their recent theft incident and all.

I don't know what to do. I want to put these on as soon as possible. Maybe I will have a tackle at it, but I don't think I will much luck with it. What do you guys think?

Those of you who have installed the pulleys themselves, how did it go? What special tools were needed?

Thanks.

you said it yourself...the only real issue is the shear force that it takes to get the pulley off and new one on. I actually talked to the mechanic that installed my headers today and he said the same thing. You could do it yourself pretty easy with the proper tools (but isnt that the case with most jobs), that is why you should take it in if you dont have the means yourself.

I do have air tools, but it only has like 200 lb/ft of peak power; usually runs at like 150.

I guess I'll have a go at it. Worst case scenario, I can't do it and take it to a shop. I just hate not doing things myself.

no worst case scenario - you do it but one thing was off, maybe to tight or too lose, and your motor blows

Could've done without that. Thanks for putting horrible images in my head.

id say go for it. you may need a pulley puller but id say go for it. start out with the crank pulley. it will be the hardest to get off. worst case senereo is you wont be able to get it off and you wll have to pay some one to do it.

if you lived a little closer id say come on over, id do it for ya

Thanks for the offer, though, Kris.

How much would a pulley puller go for?

They can be kinda pricey to buy especially for a one time use. NAPA shows them for a little under $100. You should be able to rent one.

Also, the torque spec for the crankshaft pulley is 181 lb ft, so your impact gun should be able to handle it.

What about using a nice 18" breaker bar??? That is what I used when I put the UR pulley on my G35. Just make sure that you block the wheels and have someone step on the brake when you are doing it since the car WILL move. Others have put the breaker bar against the pavement and then just cranked the motor over very slightly to break the bolt free. I wouldn't recommend it, but it will work.

I don't think there's enough room for an 18" breaker bar. It's pretty crowded in there.

i got mine for about 35 bucks, and ig you get a good extension you can use a big breaker bar, but there is nothing to stop the crank from turning, unless you take some clolth line rope and feed as much down one of the spark plug holes to keep the piston from hitting TDC and rotating. (old trick, but make sure that cylinder is on its compression stroke so all the valves are closed)

your impact gun may work try it

The impact gun spins the nut off before the crankshaft can turn, right?

How's it work when tightening the nut?

same way. the impact gun does it by quick blows over and over, where a a breaker bar does it by constant leverage.

Did you use the impact gun to tighten the nut?

Well, i was thinking that with the extension end of the breaker bar facing down ON the pavement. Then, with it braced against the pavement, you just crank the engine over LIGHTLY and it should break the bolt free. Just make sure that the engine is cranking the right direction!! YOu might be just tightening the bolt up even more!!! Then, to tighten it, just take out your He-Man muscles, have someone stand on the brake HARD and tighten that bad boy up!! If you have a torque wrench that actually goes up to 180 ft. lbs., use that for the rest of it (most torque wrenches with 180 ft. lbs. should be pretty damn long also, so the leverage should help a decent amount.
