My First Kill – Bonneville 1997-1999 SSEi
I’ve had my TL-S since March 14th, and have never been fortunate enough to pull up next to someone that wanted to race. Every time I thought someone wanted to race they would always back off before I hit 40, and this is supposed to be the racing capital of the world. Today I was driving and noticed someone pulled out behind me on a side street catching up very quickly. He pulled up behind me at a stoplight, so I hit the throttle somewhat hard. He was on my tail, but didn’t want to pass me. The next stoplight was coming soon, and I was praying that it I would see it change. I was in luck!!!
The Bonneville switched lanes and pulled up next to me at the light. The guy said, “Let’s Go”. I nodded yes. I brake torqued with VSA disabled starting in D1. When the light changed I let off the break, and the tires broke loose. I am so disappointed with the OEM tires. While the tires were still chirping I notice the Bonneville was right next to me dead even. When we got to about 40 I heard his supercharge spinning up. By the time I hit 60 I pulled ahead by about one car length. When I hit 90 I was way out in front by at least 6 car lengths. I could still hear his engine roaring trying to keep up. The next light changed red, and I slammed on the breaks so we could both hit the light. He pulled up next to me and said, “Damn, what the F??? do you have under that hood?” I told him it was a stock TL-S. He said nice car, and nice race. The light was just about to change, and he said, “I’m not going to race, there’s no way I could win.

BTW - how do you like shifting from D1? I love it when it get's serious. Also, try leaving VSA on and see what you think. I have't got proof, but I suspect the tires spin off sets any gains that the traction control costs you. At least until you get some meat under there.

6 car lenght on a Bonneville SSEi at only 90mph? Man, eihter the guy was an idiot or he didn't have an SSEi. Nice kill, but 6 car length on someone that was "trying" is very hard to swallow. I don't think you can get 6 car lenght on an Accord V6 and I know the Bonneville is faster.

My previous car was a 98 Accord LX V6. I used to always race my friend who had a 93 Bonneville SE. Every time we raced I always won. I'm sure for that reason he traded his SE for a 96 SSEi. We raced a few times, but I would always loose by at least a car length to 60. Every time we raced it was always the same thing. He would always jump out by at least a car length, and when I hit VTEC he stopped pulling away. The Accord felt like it had no power up to around 4000RPM. A stock Lumina once pulled on me by almost a car length until I hit VTEC then it was over.
I loved my Accord for top end excitement. You could hold 3rd gear to almost 120, but its lack of power at the low end sometimes caused me great frustration.
