My car is tuned.... finally

My friend just got an AEM UEGO wideband gauge-type controller, so we hooked it up to my car and went out to tune. Dyno-tuning is safer, yeah, but it could never simulate an actual driving condition/environment.

We did a few 3rd and 4th gear runs and got the AFR readings. My car was running at high 11:1 to low 12:1 range, which is pretty rich. After taking away about 15-20% of fuel on average across the RPM band using the V-AFC II, the car is now running at 13.9-14.1 AFR consistently. The powerband is a lot smoother and it's quicker.

My car put down 239 fwhp at a dyno day a while back. I'm expecting about 250 fwhp now. I'll post a dynograph whenever I get it dynoed again.

Just thought I would share.

Ive been waiting a long time to hear about this from you! Hopefully you will get some better gains than those who have experimented with the V-afc II before you!

When are you planning on getting on the dyno again?

There's a dyno shop in town, but they haven't had a dyno guy in a long time. The second nearest dyno is about 45 minutes away.... instead of waiting for a dyno day (which might not even happen again this year), I might just pay like 40 bucks or whatever and get a couple of pulls. I'll post the dynograph whenever I get it done.

Oh, yeah, my fuel mileage went up, too. Only just a tinny bit, but nonetheless.

Good job on the tuning! Before you race anyone, PA -- be sure to lose the rims ... maybe find some nice lightweight 16"s (or 17") just to have a little more punch off the line ...

Yeah, I'm seriously thinking about downsizing to 17"s. These Enkeis are 19 pounds each, so they aren't really heavy or anything, but they are still killing the performance. I'm gonna try to find some 17"s at around 14 pounds; right now, the TE-37's are looking really good. They came out with Mercury Silvery.

thats decent power for a TLS. was that dyno corrected or uncorrected?
u should try going catless and run some higher octane or torco fuel additive which increase octane by as much as 9-10 points.

whats ur timing set at?

239whp that's fuckin great man!!!

Im getting my V-AFC 2 (that's been sitting in my garage for months) installed soon... I guess i'll have to find someone with a AEM UEGO! it seems like it can replace a dyno session!

im also gonna buy type-s cams this winter, along with a hypergrounding kit, and probably the hypervoltage kit too... im hoping for 225whp

btw, is there a way to adjust the timing on our car?? cuz im thinking that could help us quite a bit!

Sure i do, ive had one for almost 3k now. (but i probably would have to help push for the extra hp needed)

Might want to get the throttle body along with the intake manifold also. If you got the extra funds, go ahead and get the complete top end.

Closer to stoichiometric...

didn't know you could do that with the V-AFC 2...does it allow you to play with volumetric efficiency too ?

I got the throttle body already, and I polished my intake manifold.

I didn't know you got a new tranny. I thought the TL was down for the count. Good to hear she's up and running again, though.

stick --
I'm not trying to achieve max power. I just want my car tuned for the street and occasional track times. Timing has been unchanged, since there's no timing pulleys available for our cars.

Justin --
No, as far as I know, there's no way to adjust the timing. Regardless, your car should pick up some power with those mods you're planning.

SK2003 --
Nope, it can't control the volumetric efficiency. It can only control the fuel delivery, thus modifying the AFR. Still works pretty well, though.

Yea i got it rebuilt (rental car costs were getting too high) ill be looking at geting a new car this winter to replace the TL. im sick of being concerned about the tranny failing and dont have the patience for it any more.

Kool !
I'm guessing it was you who had a thread about the AEM UEGO and the different options a while back. Pretty kool that you were able to tune your a/f ratios better.
Time will tell if your mileage increases.....15-20% is a lot.

I filled up just before tuning, and right after that, I had to leave for my parents' house and the trip there and back, and the distance travelled while tuning have burned through an entire tank. It's averaging out to be about 25 mpg including like 30 miles of continuous WOT runs, and flooring it several times on the higway to pass traffic. I used to get about 21-22 mpg with that style of driving.... so I think it's safe to say that it's gone up by 2-3 mpg, city/highway combined.

I can't wait to get the AEM EMS now.

maybe thats why you were burning up O2's. too much fuel not being burned??

Yeah, that was one of the two reasons I could think of. The other reason is possible broken oil seals. That would spew oil all over the o2 sensor; but the compression test came out well, and I'm not burning much oil. So I'm just hoping that it was the unburned fuel heating up the o2 sensor super hot... hopefully this will put an end to it.

Yea i doubt it was oil. Most likely fuel

oh, yeah... a while back, the FPR vacuum hose somehow came off, and the ECU thought it was losing fuel pressure. So it was adding something like 27% more fuel than necessary. That probably played a big role in killing the o2 sensors, too.

Wow...impressive on the mileage increase.

Good luck with the AEM EMS.

If you were running that rich, prior to this adjustment, I'd also say it is a contributing factor to killing 02 sensors.
I use to go through plugs and sensors in my "tuning" days ('82 280ZXturbo). I mis-calculated my first set of injectors and was having problems just running them at idle. I was at the autoparts store every few weeks asking for plugs.
Got in over my head back then...didn't understand enough about basic engine thermodynamics.

I was playing with the Tec II back then. Still have the car and about 3 3" 3 ring binders of notes. I plan to bring it back to life one of these dayz.
