Unhappy My 225/55s are rubbing on me! any ideas?

I just now noticed that my new tires rub A LOT when I am making turns in reverse! (like backing out of a drive way) any ideas? I was wondering if changing the tire pressure might help out. How much PSI should I be using with these tires? I think the tires might be boldging to much during these turns, because it wont do it at very slow speeds.

Has anyone else had this problem? my car isnt dropped and it only does this when turing in reverse, its fine the rest of the time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

first, find out where its rubbing. if its the fender, get a performance shop to roll your fenders. if its the plastic trim in the wheel well, you might have to trim off some of those things. but the best solution i think is switch to 215/55 tires. changing tire pressure will not do a thing because modern radial tires changes size very little over a wide range of pressures.
it rubs more at high speed because at high speed your car generates more down force when hitting a bump, thus effectively lowers your car transiently. hope this helps.

I have 215 and they used to rub often. You gotta roll or cut your fenders like Laguna just said. Or if you don't got the cash, you can just wait, and they'll eventually rub away enough, that they won't rub half as much.

Is your car dropped? I didn't think 225/55's rubbed? Oh, yea, don't get 215's, you made the right choice with the 225's.

No issues whatsoever with the 225/55-16 tires on stock TL rims. No rubbing at all. It is the best possible "mod" you can do to the car, IMO. My car is stock in every other way.

If you haven't droped your car, I don't see why it's rubbing. I have CT springs and I have 225/40/18 and they only rub when I have a full car and I have to hit a dip going pretty fast. I would recommend you diagnose the problem fast cuz this don't sound right and I hate to see a fellow TL'er get screwed.

Question

Dumb question... how do you know when it's rubbing? Does smoke come out or some? Or do you hear it??

hunter001,

Im running the same setup here and my tires rub when I turn to go up my drive way, but it only happends when im making very tight turns, like during parking. Its VERY common when I am backing out in reverse and I turn the wheel a good bit. I dont think there rubbing too hard, but I would like to do something. What PSI are you using in your tires? thats the only possible difference I see between our two cars.

After I switched my tires (Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 225-55ZR-16 all-seasons), I did take my car to an empty parking lot and turned the steering in extreme angles to check it out, but encountered no rubbing at all...but I did not try turning it in extreme angles while going uphill (is that what you do while going up your driveway?)....hmmm...I will try it out and let you know....

Ooops...about the psi..

I used to run 33psi all around...but recently switched to 35psi all around...no difference in handling but better mileage with the 35psi.

I had 225/17 and dropped 2.25" w/eibach springs put on my 2001 TL and here is what I did to get the rub out. I also had a offset of 42mm on my 17 wheels (std is 55mm). There is a 1" lip on the rear wheel-well, and that was trimmed so the tires would not rub the fender (works like a charm). I also had to roll the front fender (this is done manually with the strength of your own two hands, you are actually massaging the plastic liner under the wheel-well).
