multiple symptoms no solution

What does all this mean:

car stalls while driving, randomly
car occassionally will not start (doesn't turn just quiet) couple of tries later it's fine
radio stops working and i need to punch in code to reset
door locks do not work on random occassion
sometimes there is a really rough idle, but it goes away.

All of these problems come and go and do not seem to happen together or seem related. Any ideas?

Car stalling and not starting up Sounds like possibly a bad ignition switch. Have you ever had it replaced? The 99s had a issue with them and i believe there was a recall or TSB on them

Yes, there was an ignition switch recall for the 1999 TL.

And there's no time limit on recall items. But they'll only change it once so you'll need to buy one if you've had it done already.

If you're not the original owner, Acura can tell you if it's been done yet.

Another thing that can cause the stalling problems is a bad ignition key or interference with a second Honda/Acura immobilizer key.

But I would check out the ignition switch first. With 270,000 miles you've probably cycled that ignition switch many, many times!

i spoke with my local dealer and they say the only open recall I have is for the interlock switch. Is this the same part you are refering to?

No that's a different recall item.

It makes sense with the car stalling, bacause it starts right up. The occassional rough idle may be unrelated.

The past few days, many times when I go to start it, it starts up fine, but i need to punch in the code for the radio. Very random. Are you thinking that it's the same thing, the ignition switch for that symptom?

What about the repair. Can a guy with a ton of woodworking tools replace an ignition switch? How much is an ignition switch?

thanks for your replies.

It's generally not a good idea to work on your TL with woodworking tools. ;-)

I think there are threads on how to replace the ignition switch. Try a forum search for that.

When my 1999 TL was having stalling problems I bought a replacement ignition switch for $53 shipped from an Acura dealership. So you should be able to find one for about that much.

The problem in my car appeared to be due to a bad immobilizer key since the problem went away after I replaced the key. I never did install the ignition switch.
