Mufflers

So who wants to be the guinea pig and get these to try. Im seriously thinking about getting them. You can have the best of both worlds and everywhere in between.

not really a cutout as that would dump closer to the headers..

this is more of a variable system that closes or opens a valve in the muffler to control flow and sound

i think... lol

Hm...seems cool either way, if I kept the car I think I would've went this route, I think if the civic J-series guys saw this I think they'd be more willing to get one than us.

The corvette has had it for some time and it works well. Ive thought about it for a few years now. I bought a set of Dynomax VT mufflers that have something similar but its opened by exhaust pressure. I like the idea of being able to control when it opens. Ive been playing with a stock muffler and an electric exhaust cutout trying to do something similar but its tricky with the internal design of the stock muffler.

The corvettes are opened by exhaust pressure iirc. I agree it does work really well on them. The year they put it on the car gained 6-8 hp with just a different designed muffler

The corvettes are actuated and opened at a certain RPM. Many owners put a module in to open it on demand.

is it just me or is that just a window regulator motor welded to an exhaust flapper??? Curious to see the electronics behind controlling the endpoint of rotation as well as the durability of the motor when exposed to the elements and exhaust heat...

I remember watching Muscle Car or one of those shows one morning and they did a stealth Nova.

All they did is use a valve like this:

Yes, you can buy an electric exhaust dump and install it, but this doesnt dump the exhaust out under the car. It is built into the muffler, and one can adjust how much open or closed it is and not have it and the sound dumping under the car but out the tail pipe.

Why? You still have the too quiet or too much drone problem. This gives you the quiet while driving normal, and the sound everyone is after when wot.

Exactly. You could get a cat back but you would still have it either too quiet or have too much drone. This is the best of both worlds.

Look at the dual tips of pretty much every BMW out in the last 10 years.
You will see a butterfly valve just inside the right tip.
Works great varying back pressure vs load and rpm, but keep in mind the ECU also adjusts all the variables on the engine.
Manually adjusting the back pressure in our cars does not always mean more power or even sound.

It's cool and all, but goodluck finding someone willing to spend over 1k for mufflers to test out.
I like the idea, but not price wise.

I highly doubt anyone would install those mufflers for HP Gains.. But Sound Wise if we do custom pipe from catback, remove mid muffler and resonator this should make a beautiful Sound! Guaranteed...

It sure would mean sound, and if you had a decent cat back piping you would see power, You just wouldnt have to live with drone.

This same thing gained the corvette 8hp at the wheels. With a good exhaust system it would gain us hp as well. I really wish i had a dyno near by. With my current setup there is a HUGE difference in sound and power (especially from 5-7k rpm) with the comptech quiet tip inserts in vs out. With the stock piping there was zero noticeable difference in power. Having the ability to have it quiet while cruising but the ability to have the sound and power when WOT would be seriously nice.

There's a dyno not far from my house. C&S performance in butler has one in their shop. Also I think there's one in West Bend as well. I forget the name of the shop though.

So curiosity got the best of me. I cut open a stock muffler 2 electric exhaust cutouts and a little pipe and welding i could do this to the stock mufflers in under an hour. They are a chambered design and would work well for this (would be easiest to add dual tips though)

I haven't really researched it much because I honestly can't afford it. I've been pretty much buying everything on sale or used then do install myself. I'm getting there though. Gonna start a car savings fund this year. It'll either be for trans failure or 6mt swap. Hoping for the second one.

Nah wouldn't rebuild. I'd swap in AV6 trans in the event of catastrophic trans failure. If I can get another year and a half out of it I should be able to do the 6MT swap. Just gotta have the $$ for everything and the time to do it.
