Moving center console

Ok, let me get this out of the way first - for those who know about this please don't reply with some kind of sarcastic or flaming remarks. Having said that, did you know that the center console can be shifted forward? You know, the thing where you rest your right elbow when driving. I was driving my boss home last night and he accidently hit it on his way out and it shifted forward. I owned the car for over a year now and didn't even realise that. Oh by the way, it's a TLS, not sure about TLP.

Thumbs up

That is the coolest feature. I love the fact that that thing slides. I believe the TL-P does it as well....

I didn't even know that. How do you do it? Just push it forward from the back of it or do you have to squeeze something?

Yup, I found it by accident on my 01 TL also. I used the center console as a hand rest while situating my self in the seat and it moved forward. Now I used it daily.

It just slides... no need to squeeze anything. Just pull it from the front and the top part slides out a couple of inches!!

Yep, I knew that along with:

You can still open and close windows and sunroof for up to 10 minutes after you shut off the car, or until you open a front door.

The speed sensitive wipers readjust themselves after you come to a complete stop and take your foot off the brake. In other words, as you speed up, the wipers will go slightly faster, but they will only slow down after you've come to a stop. Go ahead and try it.

If you leave the headlights on, they will turn off after 20 seconds. They will turn on again if you unlock the doors with the remote or if you open the driver's side door. (Old news for us TL veterans)

There are a few others I can't remember.

I figured out the sliding center console by accident as well. I never use it though. I guess its a nice feature but it slides back a little too easily.

Included with our car there is this book called the Manual. Inside the manual there are a lot of features explained along with tips and care instructions. Check it out, it is very informative.

That wasn't necessary.... there are a lot of little features that can be overlooked when browsing the manual.

If the guy had asked how to I change to SS mode... that would be different, but there are subtle things which you may not realize right away....

i disagree.. the manual is not something u should browse through... its a silly attitude.. u just bought a $30k car, u should know everything u possibly can about it, especially when the manufacturer feels its important enough to put in manual. u should always read the manual cover to cover, it really doesnt take too long.

I've pretty much read the manual cover to cover and I don't remember it mentioning that the armrest slides. I'm not saying it doesn't say it... just that it didn't stand out... so it can be overlooked.

First thing I did was read the manual when I got the car. If I wasn't driving it or here I was checking out the manual. I did this with all of my new cars... even the ones' that weren't $30k.....

I find out something new everytime I read the manual. I read it twice when I first bought my '03 TLS in March. (This is when I learned of all the features mentioned above.)

I recently bought the Helms manual and was learning about how the Navi and CLimate controls are wired together last night.... sounds fun huh?

I'll have to agree with you on this one but my obsessive compulsive side tells me I have to check it out tonight.

Lets see if I can remember... it's no big deal but I smiled when I discovered it.

Turn the A/C Off.
Hit the Mode button. Only the mode icons will show up.
Not sure if it actually moves the vents.

I do read the manual but I don't remember reading about the sliding console. The only section where I read every word is the maintence section.

Same for my '93 Vigor, but the wierd thing was that it wasn't the case for the moonroof. So while you could still operate the windows with the key off, you had to turn the key to open/close the moon roof.

I was pleased when I saw that they took care of that when I got my TL.

My 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP had the delayed windows thing. And you could still play stereo for a few minutes after you shut off the engine and took out the key (few minutes or until you open the door). Oh, and it also had delayed locking. It waited 5 seconds after you press Lock on the remote before actually locking the doors. It came in handy sometimes. And it was possible to reprogram that function and turn it off.

More Tips

This reminds me of a thread from earlier this year where we all contributed those little known TL facts.

The dealer showed me that when I bought the car.

Also, you can turn the Radio/Tape/CD on directly. What I mean is you do not have to press the volume knob down. Just select the button you want (AM, FM, CD or Tape).

Yup, just push it forward.

Well... I knew that feature since the first day; 'cuz my sales showed it to me when I picked it up. I think he did his work pretty good. :p

Another unknown feature found too!

I found the sliding armrest by accident as well on my 2003 TL-S. I also just found another feature that solved a problem that was driving me nuts.

You all know that there is a power receptacle in the center console. When I looked at how to get the cord for my cell phone from the compartment to the upper portion of the console, I saw that there was a little cutout on the right side. But this just didn't do the job for me because my cord would pull out of the outlet.

Now the other day I noticed that forward in the compartment is an opening that goes into the cupholder and is a perfect, for me, way to run the power cord to my cell phone. If you have a cell phone that you want to hook up to the power outlet in the center console, check this out.

yes the sliding console is so very conveinient
my salesman showed me around the car when we made the deal and the car was ready to go

i don't know if this is old news but the locking system is quite cool, if you leave the key in the ignition switch in the car, you cant lock the door with the tab on the door, neither can you lock all doors with the button (stick?? )!! you push it down all four door locks pop up!
