Question motor oil changing

i am currently running regular motor oil but i would like to switch to mobil 1 full synthetic. is there any kind of process that must be done in order to make this switch or can i just change to mobil 1 oil next time i change my oil? do i need to first run a blend and then go fully synthetic? also once you are running full synthetic is it still necessary to change your oil every 3k miles? thanks

I switched to Mobil 1 at 3500 and I didn't anything special. I now change every 5K and use a Mobil 1 filter.

Just switch to synthetic. But if you want, you can get an engine flush done, which is not absolutely necessary but it would help get rid of the old conventional oil.

You can switch to full synthetic motor oil form conventional oil with no problem and no special flush. When you get an oil & filter change only 1/10 of 1% of the old oil remains in your engine. Have at it and enjoy going full sythetic.

This is not necessarily true.... Some cheap as places do not allow the full drain of the oil from your engine. You can find anywhere from a full qrt of oil in some cars. What people forget are that you should leave the oil cap off so that the engine block creates a vaccuum and the remaining oil will come out of the drain pan. Also, i have seen folks put the drain plug back on and the oil cap on before they remove the oil filter. The filter can hold quite a bit, so after you remove the oil filter, you should remove the cap and the drain plug again and then wait a couple of minutes. You will see how much additional oil comes out.... measure it if you don't believe me....

That is why i do all my oil changes for all my cars at home. Screw Walmart, on my girls ride, they charged me one time for a oil filter they did not even change (I found out cause I marked the damn thing). You also have to remember that when you take it to places like Walmart, jiffy lube and the like they use lifts and that means that your car will be perpendicular to the ground. If you notice the drain plug, it is angled and also does not sit at the lowest point of the pan, therefore it would be in your best interest use ramps thus creating an incline for your car to sit on.

Regardless of all that i said, a little old oil is not going to hurt, but it is just my opinion that if your going to do a job, then do it right.....

Straight change over, and then replace every 18000 miles (http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../oil-life.html)

just drain the oil (i let mine drip for like a hr) then switch to synthetic

i run 12k intervals and have it tested every time. and every time the oil is ready for more miles.

12,000 mile? 18,000 miles? You'll never be able to get away with that in Texas! I do Mobile-1 Syntec 5W-30 and mobile 1 M105 filter every 4,000 miles.

drain out your old oil and fill with cheap stuff.

run for a little bit and then drain it back out.

fill with mobil 1 with a new high quality filter and you should be all set.

i run 10K intervals.

I did.

I have the same setup Mobil 1 & M1-105 oversized filter, just changed it last friday for the first time since December 4th...~8k miles. I might go 10K on this change since the oil wasnt really even black...just a healthy dark brown.

May I ask why you recommend using cheap oil then drain it out before changing to synthetic?

I go 3,000 miles on Mobil1 Synthetic 10W30 with M1-104. I don't know you guys are getting away with 10k intervals. My oil gets dirty as hell at 3k.

here's the best evidence that longer drain intervals are totally possible...long-term M1 test that recently concluded. this was posted not too long ago over on the other forum.

Man, I was changiong my oil at 6,000 mile intervals. I knew the oil could go 10K or more miles, but like some of my texas friends I can't do that. If any of you guys are familiar with the Houston area, you know that is undergoing some major construction and thus the increased occurence of airborne particles. My oil get dirty really easy and therefore i opted for the lesser mileage changes....

But to each his own, right?

Okay, so u did 8K miles in 30-80 degree weather. Just wait till it gets 100+ this summer ... I still don't think you can do 12K to 18K miles between oil changes. Why take the risk on it getting thick and gunky? Even Acura recommends oil changes every 7500 miles under normal driving conditions.

I have no issues with spending the $40 for oil change every 4K - 5K miles. And if I did, I would not be driving a $32000+ car.

I will wait because when IM @ ~7500 miles it probably will be that warm, but no way will I pay 40 bucks for a 15 minute job. Enthusiast > everyone else

I meant $40 bucks for the oil and filter and do it my self ... probably less that that ... $23 for 6qts of mobile 1 5w30 at costco and about $12-14 for m105 filter at autozone.

btw ... what part of town u in?

most any oil out there will be good enough to run in your car for a short period (a couple hundred to 1,000 miles). it removes all of the old oil that remains in the system thus helping the synthetic by giving it a clean home, thereby negating the need for an engine flush with either a machine or chemicals.

i run mobil 1 10w30 with an oversized filter.
