Motegi Wheels

Has anyone heard of Motegi Racing (http://www.motegiracing.com)? I found some wheels that I really like, but they are VERY inexpensive ($180 a piece).

Also, the wheels are 18x7.5 with a +45mm offset. They should fit, right?

Thanks

I looked at the wheels, and they're nice, but one reason why they're cheaper may be due to weight. Those things are heavy!
Almost as heavy as stock rims, which for aftermarket wheels is bad. But if that is not a concern for u then they seem like a GREAT deal.

I have 18x7.5s with a +45 offset and they fit fine. However, I don't know about the quality of these rims.

Quality is my biggest concern. The weird thing with these rims is that they appear to be manfactured by someone else, then sold by different wheel companies. My good friend has a GTI with Konig Tantrums on it. On the Tantrum, there is a place on one of the spokes where a little Tantrum emblem plate is. If you look at the Motegi MR7 close up pic (I'd attach, but the image is too big), it has the same indentation on the spoke for an emblem plate (Motegi doesn't put anything there). Konig wheels are pretty good, aren't they?

If you take a closer look at the Motegi wheels, you will see the their below par qualities. The paint finish is not even, and the inner surface of the outer rim is not machined smooth. That's why they are priced so cheap. They are also very heavy in weight.

Have you seen Motegi in person, or can you tell all this from the picture?

Yes, I have seen the actual wheels in person in several tire & wheel stores, and examined them inside and outside. The Motegi wheels are made in China and are imported by a Canadian company called Motegi.

The company also carries a much better wheel called "MoJa" which is made in Japan and is forged. It looks like the 5-spoke style used as OEM in the Honda S2000. However, no one seems to know of its existance except in the Motegi booth in the 2000 Sema show. I emailed the company and got the reply that the MoJa wheels would be out in September/October 2001. But I don't think they are out yet.

I can only think of only one reason to justify buying the cheap Motegi wheels. If they ever get bend, just dump them and buy more new ones. It won't hurt the wallet much since they are so cheap in price.

I also liked those wheels in the gunmetal color. Not a bad price either and the 18's are only about a pound heavier than our stock wheels.

Try these Tenzo wheels also. They are about the same price, look similar and if I recall correctly the 18's are actually lighter than our stock wheels.

Montegi Wheels at Costco

If you do decide on Montegi wheels... and you have membership at Costco... just so you know... they do carry them there. They'd need to order them though... I'm not sure if they can order every one of them... but I don't see why not.... check it out... you will save some $$$

Yep, that's where I sa them too. probably not a bad idea either since you only have to put down a little money to have them ordered. Then, I guess if you don't like them you don't have to accept them since Costco is really good about taking things back.

Thanks for all the great info.

JZ39 - I like them Tenzo's - I'm going to have to check those out a little more.

What is Costco (www.costco.com)? Is it some sort of wholesale club? There are only two places in ohio that have Costco - Cinncinati and Springdale - where ever the he11 that is!

Motegi wheels, available cheap at every one of our Canadian Tire shop. Quality=heavy, poor workmanship, rough and not "refined" in terms of paint, clearcoat,. In other words, perhaps it's the ones i saw, but i wouldn't get them and would pay a bit more to get better quality.

I agree... I think if you had a cheaper car... perhaps a Honda Accord maybe go with these Montegi wheels... but most of the ones I've seen weren't very impressive. I have seen a feature in a magazine once, on a NSX, and the 3 piece wheels on that car were Montegi's. I've never seen those anywhere else or advertise.
