To turn off traction control push the TCS or VSA button depeding if you have a TL or TL-S. Turning off traction control will prevent uncontrolable wheel spin and braking from the ECU.

Well, I not an expert on this... so please don't flame.
The TCS/VSA will apply front brake when wheel spin is detected. If you don't turn it off and try to accelerate from a deadstop fast (aka lots of power and wheel spin). The car basically moves a bit, and got hold by the brake force. You lost time from that. When you turn it off, you will get a little bit of wheelspin but once you regain traction, you will jump off the line. It's like building up/charing energy to the wheel/tire.
Now of course you can't put TOO MUCH power, or else you end up spinning your wheel forever and not going anywhere.

You shouldn't just floor it... you should turn off traction control, step on the brake hard, and then give some gas. This is called torque braking, and I usually let my car rev at around 3000rpm and let go of the brake. You will have some wheel spin for that less then a second of time then you will shoot forward...
don't try this on the street please...
