Thumbs up MonteCarlo SS vs TL-P vs 89 5.0Mustang

Stopped by the runs on the way home in San Fernando. It was really late like 3:45 am. I get to the track and theres a 2001 Monte Carlo SS waiting at the light. I was pretty sure that I was gonna get smoked

I pull up and he asks me if I wanna race. Next thing you know a 5.0 Mustang pulls up next to me and revs his motor I look over and this guy and his girlfriend are looking ova with a big ass grin

So I decide to gate shift this run ( OMG let me tell you! Gate shifting is the way to go if you wanna run your car. Ive run my car numerous times in SS and I get only 5000 rpm in first... I tried gate shifting and noticed a big difference in being able to take it 6000rpm + in first.)

To make an already long story short(er). Some hot ass chick flagged it for us. I was behind half a car at 60 and passed both the monte carlo and the mustang at 90mph.

Both cars came back and asked me if my car was type S

What year TL-P do you have? Mods? I got smoked by a 2000 SS and I have a '99 TL-P.

You shouldn't have problems with the SS because I have beaten them in my 99 TL. All I had back then was an AEM CAI. But now I just got my headers so it wouldn't even be funny.

the SS has great 0-60 time coz of the torque but the power goes out quickly at the end of 2nd gear...which is around 75-80mph...
the 3.8 liter V6 doesn't have high end....

the 5.0...it's pretty old.....but there are a lot of soup up 5.0 on the street...with 500+ hp...haha...they will smoke u like the vette...

using the sportshift mode on your car as opposed to full automatic. It allows you to select gear without a clutch mimicking in some ways, a manual transmission.

just leave the gear at 1 ...not the Sports shift...

when the car reaches the redline...put to 2 on ur own

but the best result is to put it at D3...don't ever start ur car at 2...coz it's the winter gear

I can't believe that you smoked a '89 Mustang. I had the same year and it was a GT (little heavier than the LX) and that car was waaaaay faster than the TL. Was it a stick and the guy only had one leg Even with your mods I find it hard to believe....mustangs have quite a bit of torque and low end speed although the 89 tops out at 85

I was thinking the same thing.

But Andrew, an 89 or any 87-93 Stang does not top out at 85. You must have had an earlier version of the 89 model year. They changed the speedo to 140 at 89 1/2.

The 87-89 1/2 still had the carryover speedo mechanism from the previous Stang 79-86 which is basically a 70's Fairmont.

Top speed on a speedometer never really expresses a cars true top speed.

Thats true as well, but mustangs never really where good with top end speed ( > 80). I did have an earlier model 89 though...good catch

You shouldn't have to let up on the gas when you gate shift, your car will automatically cut the gas when it shifts. This is not a true manual, ya know

I've been longing to ask.....are you having any disadvantages or problems with the Tru Power Pulleys on such as low voltage and lower performance from the AC?!?!?

I dont notice anything at all with the pulleys. Once in a blue moon
my car stalls when it is cold.

I always try to shut off my car when its idle for long periods of time because I heard it drains your battery.

Back to what I was saying before, you should have no problem with the MonteCarlo SS cause I saw their 0-60 is 7.9 secs in a car mag today.

isn't the Monte Carlo just another V6/8 hog? I never thought it would be fast especially compared to its late 80's predecessor. Is it just me or was anyone else embarrassed for Chevy for that travesty "mid-90s Monte Carlo"? Shame on GM/Chevy.

monte carlo has 200hp 3.8 V6...which is the same engine to my old buick regal...

it has tremendous power from 1000-4000rpm...after...it's just weak...

it can pull u away for the first 40mph but u can catch it back...

I've beaten Monte Carlo SS's before, but what about Impala SS's? My neighbor has one, I always thought I had the fastest car in my neighborhood.

I believed the Impala is even slower than the MonteCarlo SS.

I can see you wasting the Monte.......but as far as the '89 Stang, unless it was stock w/ 125k on the odometer or the chic in the passenger seat was like 400lbs and weighing that sucker down, I don't see it. Not because I'm a Stang owner, I know my TL's fast, but definitely not in Stang territory.

I believe him about the 89 mustang. I posted that I beat one awhile back. Then again I have a Type-S. I slowly pulled away in third gear and shut down at like 80-85. I can see a TL-P keeping up with one.

Yes that thing was horrible and basically was a 2 door Lumina ! The best looking Monte Carlo was the 81-88 which still is a popular car especailly among certain crowds. As far as the Impalla SS that thing runs about 6.5 sec to 60 mph and 1/4 was 15.0 sec @92 mph so that one will get a TLP and run with a TLS, it was a torque monster down low and has plenty of cheap mods available.

I've slowly walked 2 cars on an '89-ish old 5.0 up to around 100mph but then once third gear ended around 105mph, I got OWNED (as soon as I saw him regaining ground I just jammed on the brakes a little to let him know I was done racing). He kept going by and just rocketed up to around 130mph is my guess.

He was cool though, saw him wave bye as he took an exit.

(I drive an '01 CL-S with no mods except removed intake resonator, hi-flow intake filter, and suspension mods).

Btw how is your Nos setup? Dry or wet? What kind of kit?

Im sorta of reluctant to add nos to my car because Im sorta of scuRd to take it in the dealership with the foggers installed I need my 30k maintenance and im sorta worried they might not want to work on my car. Oil change no prob! ( anyone can do that ) but all the rest I need acura to do!

Mustang Cobra huh? Hmm...either the cobra was playing around, or the driver couldn't find 3rd gear. Cobras would eat our cars alive even with I/H/E. Add a supercharger and you could keep up with one.
