Gear oil is 90, most manual transmissions use 50. Fifty is not something I'd put into any engine.

I thought it was common knowledge not to put 50 weight into your engine???!!!
you may get better performance with a 20 weight oil, but not a 50...

i did see what he asked! i simly told him not to go above a 30 weigh oil. 50 is way to high unless you are on a nascar circut running 500 laps!

I use Mobile 1 5W-30. Stick with 5W-30 for our engines.

I believe that Mobil 1 comes in a 15W-50 flavor not a 5W-50. In either case I would stick with 5W-30.

Are you sure??? I'm just messing around with you kris!!!

Ya, I run synthetic in my car too. I was thinking about changing the type of Mobil 1 for winter as well, since it does get pretty damn cold here in Toronto (sometimes as low as -35C in January).

Is 5w30 the best one to stick with??? What would be a better alternative in brutally cold temperatures??? 10w30 or 0w30???

I have run 5w50 in my family's 2000 3.2TL since day one. I know the gas mileage isnt the best, but that oil offers the best protection you can ask for. I dont wait 10k either to change the oil, it comes out every 3k, its just a more refined, heavier oil when hot. Never had any problem whatsoever with it. Hands down has my vote. If you are unsure about the 5w50, use the 5w40.

how miles do you do between oil changes? I was told you can run synthetic oil about twice as far as normal oil. So about 5-6k miles? Is that correct?

Of course the local quickylub says 3k no matter what, but they just want to make money $$$

From what I always learned (although working for Shell for 3 yrs might have had an influence) was that oil is oil, and that synthetic is just better because it is more refined and has better additives than conventional oil. It a myth that you can go longer between oil changes...although if you were to go over the 3k mark, its better to do it with a synthetic oil because it is formulated to withstand that kind of abuse due to the purity of the product. I guess its just whatever you feel comfortable with, and, obviously what you can afford.

If you ask the oil companies they say 3000K miles, so you buy more oil. But if you ask a non biased opinion 6000-evey 10000K isnt unheard of. Someone on here had their synthetic analyzed after 8000K and it was still good.

I change to Mobil 1 5W30 and the car run great. I also change it every 6k miles, and it still looks clean. I also use K&N oil filter so all that combination works very nice.

5w50 is way too much and would result in your bad gas mileage. if you was a good protection dont go above 10w30. any thing more than that ina street car is hard on the engine.
i run 5w30 at 10,000 mile intervals and the oil is just fine. to change it at 3000 miles is a waste. of money. hell honda recomends 7500 intervals. i have had my oil tested at 10k and there is a higher TBN left than standard oil had at 3k.
