Miles at Delivery

I have agreed to purchase a 2003 WDP/Ebony TLS w/ Navi and was going to get it on Thursday. My dealer received my car as a dealer swap today. I went by to inspect the car and found that it has 120 miles on it. It was trucked to my dealer so I think it was either a test drive car or the original dealer used it for his personal car. I said that I did not want this car. Initially my dealer gave me the b.s. story that the engine was "bullet proof" and I had nothing to worry about. I responded that then why is there a break in period? Now, my dealer offered $200 off accesseries. Since they say that they can't find another car, I thinking about walking away from the deal. What do you guys think?

Walk away.

When you are paying that type of money for a new car, you should be able to account for all of the miles on the odometer. My new TLS had 6 miles when it came off the truck. I suspect that a truly new TLS from the factory should have no more than 10 miles. (Im guessing here)

Good luck

Check the laws in your state, 10 miles is max to be considered new vehicle.

4 is very good. I had 6. The dealer said that they usually have between 4 and 6 when they come off the truck. All the my dealer does is drive it up the road to get a tank of gas.

I would say no more than 6-8 miles. Anything more, and it's been test driven. 120 is insane.

Oh, and if there are any other dealers close to you, I would definately tell this dealer to take a flying fudge, and walk. You should not be treated like that!

My dealer initially want to sell me a car with exactly 100 miles on it. I threw it back to him and demanded a new car. Went through the whole paperwork again. I was even explaining to them, I am paying for a new car not a used. I was happy when he exchanged it with a car with 7 miles on.

I can't remember if I had 3 or 4 miles on it... but it was one of those. It was straight off the truck, wrapped in plastic when it came in. There was even some plastic left in it when I picked it up (inside the door jams and stuff). They took that off right in front of me....

When I bought my CL in '98, I picked it up with 62 miles. I knew about that though b/c I knew it was coming from another dealer and I knew which one and I authorized it b/c I really wanted the color that I got.....

What it comes down to is that you need to be happy. The dealer needs to sell the car to pay his bills--you have the luxury of waiting or not buying at all. So if you're not happy with that many miles, then demand a new car with single digits on the odometer. Don't give in for a couple hundred bucks in accessories!

Mine had 6 miles on it, and it still had the plastic on the seats and body. I wouldn't buy the demo because when I drove it they encouraged me to "give it gas." If everyone else test drove it the way I did, it did not go through it's normal break-in period.

Just enjoy the car and stop worrying about the mileage on the car.

Exclamation Caution

I have purchased about 35 cars in my lifetime (cars for me) and about 1,000 fleet cars. Two of those "personal" cars with miles on them turned out to be nothing but trouble, one had 45 miles on it, the other 125.

Only, purchase cars shipped direct from the factory, to the dealer with no miles on it (typically, 4 to 8 miles)

Good Luck

Damn! I feel ripped off cuz I had about 10 miles on mine when I picked it up! Still had the plastic on it. Oh well nothing I can do now (2 months, 2500 miles later and still smiling!).

My TL-S has 50 miles on it when I picked it up. It has to be driven from Redwood City to Oakland as part of the dealer exchange.

Hum...so far I think I'm the champion on this thread. Picked my baby up with 2 spankin' miles on it with hood and body panel protective plastic being taken off in front of me. They just had a new shipment in the day prior to my arrival. God, I can still smell that new car interior.

I would walk if I were you with 120 miles on it...insane. For them to throw in $200 of accessories? Not worth the potential engine troubles you might have down the road. FYI, my dealer gave me close to $200 worth of accessories just for buying there (sunroof wind deflector, mud guards, lug nuts, cargo tray, and 2 car care kits). Good luck and keep us posted.

I don't see how that's possible. Even right after they finish assembling it in the factory, they still need a drive some ways to the truck. When it arrives at the dealer, they need to drive it off and then to the closest gas station for a fill up. How can you have no miles.

I have posted on this topic quite a few times in the last 2yrs since having my car. When I first saw mine it had 6 miles on it. I did not pick it up untill 2 days later & it had 10. I don't think anybody test drove the car except service guys. My car came in just before Christmas of 1999. They called me on a Thursday night to say the car had just come in. The dealer wanted to get people thier cars before Christmas that was on that Saturday.I had been waiting for 3 months already. I did not wan't to go out to the my credit union on Christmas Eve. I knew it would have been a mad house
on that day. I think they worked on the car to add spoiler & my other stuff Friday Christmas Eve. They were closed Saturday for Christmas. I went out Sunday to look at the car but did not pick it up because I did not have paperwork from crredit union yet. The car had 6 miles then on it with very little gas in the tank.
I was going out to get it Monday afternoon but paperwork was messed up at credit union. I then told them I would be out laterthat eve after rush hour. They called me back & asked could I pick it up that Tuesday mourning & I said yes. When I got the car it had 10 miles & slightly more gas. The salesperson then let me drive down to the Sunoco gas station & fill up with 94 Premium.
I still think I have some paper work aroun the house that says that your new ACURA will have no more than X miles on it at time of delivery. The mileage number I forget but mine was below that number.

ive worked at a car dealership for almost 7 years now...........we have sold lots of demos ...........most of these demos were not "broken in" properly and i have yet to see one with engine problems......are there any documented cases of this?..............your only going to have 4 or 5 miles on a car if its fresh of the truck.....some of these cars will be test driven........if the dealer they got the car from only had 1 type s the miles are probably from demos...................just my2cents

7 miles. 120 doesn't sound right and it's definitely not "new". Tell them to get you a "new" one.

I actually had like 2 but you can have zero, some companies set the odometer at like 9999998 which give them a few mile to move the car around.

Take it - If these cars are built to take serious mileage then why is everyone *****in'

I just picked my 03 TLS Navi (121 miles)and they explained to me that in order to get the car the salesman would half to bring a car to anothor dealer for mine basically a "Dealer Trade" sounds like this is your case scenario.

IF THEY WARNED AND ASKED YOU AHEAD OF TIME AND GOT YOUR APPROVAL then I would take it-

If they just did this without asking I would tell him to stick the car up his ass- as most everyone else was saying

When I bought mine, it had around 300 on it. They got it from another dealership on trade and drove it rather than truck it in. It was on the lot when I went to buy one, was exactly what I wanted, they were willing to give me a great deal and I didn't want to wait for them to get another one exactly like it with less mileage so I bought it. It's never really been an issue with me with any car. It's a matter of personaly preference. If there are other dealers around and you don't mind going through the hassle of negotiating another deal, then get one somewhere else. Personally, I feel my time is worth more then a couple hundred miles on the car.

When mine was delivered, it had 14 miles on it, but I know they had test driven it, because I test drove it the day before I bought it. When I took it off the lot on the test drive, it only had 6, and I drove it all the way to my house, so I think all the extra miles were from my test drive anyway.

I received my 2002 WDP/ebony TLS with 74 miles on it..I was considering walking away or getting another color with less miles, but seriously, our cars have 50,000 mile warranties and if anything goes wrong then it will be fixed for free. But really, our cars are built to withstand any type of break in period without having adverse affects on the car. 120 miles does sound steep though, so just review your options at this point.

Since I did my TL-S deal over the phone and had to drive a couple of hundred miles to the dealership, I knew they were going to have the car and one of the salespersons would have a chance to drive it around some (we all know that they do!). So I made them FAX me my tentative contract with the color, price, options, etc, and at the very bottom, that the car must have less than 7 miles at the time of delivery. I have a WDP too but a 02 model. You shouldn't have to buy a car as new if it has 100+ miles that has almost definitely been rough-handled a bit. Why take a chance with your investment. Walk away!

P.S. I had 6.5 miles when I took delivery.

I filled cheated now . I picked mine up with 18 miles on it and the dealer said it was normal because they had to test if the car was ok. The wrapping was still on it though so I didn't suspect anything.

i had 42 miles on mine,,,,it was also a dealer transfer i checked the distance between the dealers and the numbers seemed about rite 4700 miles later its still ok but yes 120 miles sounds alittle extreme so depending on how bad u want the car its up to you but if ur not desperate for it and plan to keep it,,,,,id say walk away from it if u can

Just to let everyone know, I told the dealer that I didn’t want this car. And since he couldn’t find another one, I said the deal was off and I’ll just keep my current car (2001 S4). Not sure what I’m going to do next.

To answer some questions, there is only one dealer in Memphis so I guess I won’t be getting another Acura anytime soon. Also, while negotiating the deal, I told the salesman that I wanted a car with low miles (less than 20). They said that the dealer that they swapped with didn’t let them know that the car had this many miles on it. I’m not sure that I believe them. Oh well, thanks for your advise.
