maximizing fuel economy on 01 tl

I live in FL and gas prices for premium is reaching about $2.80. I will drive a lot on the highway and was wondering at what speed to be maxamize our fuel economy. Also in the city whats the best way to maxamize it. I did a search on the topic but had no luck.

65-85mph will give you best economy, big range, but that's it. also increase tire pressure to between 35-37psi, get some gumout completr fuel system cleaner, clean your TB, K&N drop in air filter and you should see a pretty good gain in your MPG. I get around 25-28mpg out of my 99tl-p and I hit WOT a lot. if i didnt gun it so much i bet 30mpg isn't out of reach.

oh and i also have a massive system in my trunk that weighs about 100lbs and my spare is still in there too, that extra weight will decrease your MGP a little bit too.

I happen to drive highway a lot last few months and tried to experiment with tire pressure and speed for very same reason. Here what I observed.
The best speed for mpg is 65-75, no more. At speed 78 and up (80-85) mpg drops. At 70-75 mph I got about 33 mpg. At 80 and up I got about 27-28 mpg.
Don’t pump up tire pressure over 33-34 psi cold. I had it at about 35 and wore out center of tires faster than the sides.
And don't forget to keep your air filter clean.

i get 32 at 80-85, and your tires Wont wear out on the edges from more than 33-34. outeredge weare is from underinflated tires. i had mine at 41 psi and they wore/wear perfectly even

I really trust most things you say on this site - but i find this really hard to believe (unless you have some crazy TLP) and there is no way you ran 41 psi and wore the tires even. I noticed the middle of mine wearing more when I ran 37psi cold for a while. I now run 33-34psi cold.

I agree with mlionel on the speeds - I always get 29-30 mpg with 100% highway at about 75 mph, but once I hit 80+ for a trip, the mileage drops to about 27 everytime. (which is still good IMO)

I did not say that over inflated tire wear out edges faster; I said that they wear out center. Mine lost proportionally haft the tread in center vs. edges in about 4K miles.

its no lie, all my tires i have ever run, have been run in the 38-42 psi range and ive never wore the center out faster. 33-34 is just WAY to low for me, i dont like the handeling at that psi

As for handling at higher psi, I fount that my car does not handle as nice with 35 and up psi cold, as it does at 32-34 psi cold. It feels like car is “dancing” and bouncing on the road and reacts to just about any imperfection of pavement by sliding off sideways, jerking slightly.

check tire pressure, drive at a steady 60-65, try not to have quick accelerations or use the brake too often. let off the gas and coast when you don't need to brake.

i wouldnt recommend driving that "slow" on the highways...unless you want every car up your ass end

i know for a proven fact the car will handle better with a raised tire pressure. Ive spent alot of hours on the track and driving to know. The responce is much faster hence the feeling your getting. some dont like it, some learn to live with it, you will improve mileage by raising tour pressure and i personally like the ride alot better with higher psi in the tires as opposed to the spongy slower responce steering and less performance low with the recomended psi.

And 30+ MPG on the highway is good even for most 4cyl cars. The TL is good that it gives that kind of milage even with a powerful V6. Just try to keep the speeds down. The faster you drive over 50mph the more gas it uses.

I am strongly considering getting rid of my sub and amp. Just keeping my interior speakers with a amp on them. My sub weighs 120lbs with the box and the JL bass amp is about 10 to 15lbs.

Well, something very easy to do is NOT fill your tank up all the way. Only fill it to the 1/2 tank mark. This way, you don't carry the extra weight of 10 gallons of fuel around when you drive/accelerate/decelerate.

I doubt it matters that much, I mean with my system and a car full of stuff and 2 people with a full tank, I have always gotten from 27-30 mpg on the highway just depending on how I drove. Basically if you get much less than 27 mpg with all highway, you should adjust your driving or you may need a tune up of sorts.

100lbs will make a difference in gas mileage just very small, maybe .5MPG, now if you have 300lbs of extra weight that would be 1.5 maybe 2 mpg less and that adds up at the pump over time. want better gas mileage do what i said and get a CAI or K&N filter and remove that damn 8 gallon tub of shit intake resonator!

that little bit of weight isnt making a ounce of difference. my last trip to florida, i had 4 people total (3 of which were girls, GF, daughter and her friend) and enough luggage for a month and my car averaged 31mpg with me crusing about 85 the whole way. so a 100 pound sub isnt going to make a squat of difference. now if you were draging the car at the strip every LB counts
