maxima and tl

yesterday i saw the new 04 nissan maxima commercial and they said it has 265hp. i dunno if its just me or what but i think the maxima and the tl are in a little competition, because the 2000 tl had 225hp so i guess they max made the 02 hp a little higher to 255hp and to compete. i guess acura made the TLS to increase the hp in their tl to get more buyers. i dunno if its just me what guys. give me some input, i've been noticing this for awhile

Actually the TL/S came out with 260 HP before the the 02 Maxima came out with 255. initially The 02 Maxima was suppose to have 260 HP but the production Maxima's hp was dropped to 255 due to stiffer emission regulations.

These 2 cars compete better than anything in their respective price ranges. Remember the 00 Max also had 222 HP to compete with the 00 TL's 225.

What's the quarter on a stick shift 04 Maxima?

Also, what's the quarter on the CL-S 6 speed? I have yet to see a published time on one.

1/4 on the '04 Max stick is 15.0 'ccording to C&D

1/4 on the '03 Cl-S stick is 14.6 'ccording to the same clowns

1/4 on the '03 CL-S stick 'ccording to CL-S 6-spd owners is realistically 14.2 - 14.6 -- haven't seen better than 14.2

I was told by a dealer the the reason the max went up to 255hp was because the altima had 250! He made it sound like the altima being that strong surprised the maxima designers. By the way what's up with two sedans in two different classes being so close in hp?

that dealer is a friggin idiot.... the altima went up by 5HP , so its at 245 now, not 250

and the reason why the last max was at 255 was because the altima got 240hp... though there was debate on the maxima forums that the maxima didnt really have 255 (that or the altima had more power than they stated it had). it was so that the sales of the max didnt get killed too bad

they are setting up the maxima to die in that price range. one dealer quoted a 04maxima loaded on lease for 500/month and using the same lease options, the 03 G35 laoded was for 430/month. hmmm, tough choice wudnt you say?

The Maxima may not be the best looking car, but it offers some great options like heated rear bucket seats, heated steering wheel, 18" wheels, power collapsable side-view mirrors, power tilt and tekescoping steering wheel and bi-xenon lights. I hope the new TL has these options as well, or at least some of them

I was told by a Nissan dealer that the Altima, Murano, and Maxima (as well as some of the Infiniti's) all have the same engine. They're just tuned differently which accounts for the different HP's.

An article in the Toronto Star put the 2004 Maxima and 2004 Grand Prix GTP head to head. They said the GTP beat the Maxima in a lot of the tests (except braking), but was less refined. They were talking about 6.4 sec 0-60 times for the cars.

I test drove both a 2003 Altima and 2004 Maxima. The Maxima is roomier, more features, and I found it more powerful and responsive to drive (too bad it looks funny).

I question the HP ratings of some of the Nissans. I was reading some online review of the 2003 Sentra V-Spec. I think it's advertised as 174 HP, but the reviewers complained that their test models were only showing HP in the mid-140's. I suppose this may be true of most cars though.

CarDumb, the Nissan 3.5 liter engine (VQ35?) is their bread and butter engine. Its one of the best engines out there according to many and can be found in almost everyone of their lineups:

altima 3.5
Maxima
G35
Z
Murano
FX35
I35

If you dyno a car, it may show that it has 140 hp at the WHEELS. Car companies always rate their horsepower at the CRANK. That means the horsepower the car is running in the engine. That horsepower is then utilized to power the transmission, and also turn your wheels. So even though you may get 260 hp to the crank on our TL-S's the actual power to the wheels is closer to 200hp. This is also one of the reasons that a manual transmission is better on a car than an automatic ... Manual transmissions lose less power from the crank to the wheels, while automatic transmissions lose more. (those with torque converters, not talking about SMG or CVT)..

I know there was a lawsuit at one point from Maxima owners who felt their cars were overrated since their dynos showed the same amount of horsepower at the wheel as the Altimas.. Don't know what ever came of that though.

Also in that Star test, they put an '04 GTP against an '04 Max with a 4-speed tranny, not the 5-speed auto. If the test would have been with a 5-speed auto Maxima, it would have been much closer, since the 3.5 naturally aspirated can use the extra gearing for better performance. It was up against an already bigger engine (3.8L), and also supercharged.

Sounds like GM forced Mr. Jim Kenzie to retest the '04 GTP after he slammed it back in February... they know his crappy review would have hurt sales. I say read between the lines, the first review was the real one, the second was GM using their brawn to get a better review of the car...

14.2??? Wow! I guess those WRX/STi guys are pissed. Anyway, if I end up getting an SUV in the next couple years, I might look for a used 6 spd. CL-S since the SUV would be the primary family hauler and two doors is one too many for me. For now, the TL-S has plenty of room for the family.

The Maxima may not be the best looking car, but it offers some great options like ...
Yeah, the TL-S is definitely not the most feature rich car I ever owned. Still can't understand why they didn't put auto-locking doors when you start and put the car in gear.

*heated rear bucket seats - waste...
*heated steering wheel - My car is garaged 99% of the time.
*18" wheels - Ok, 18's would be a sweet option!
*power collapsable side-view mirrors - a waste
*power tilt - ha, another motor to fail, waste
*telescoping steering wheel - maybe some would like it...
*and bi-xenon lights - yes, bring it on

Don't forget:

*DVD based entertainment system - great for the kids
*Upgraded audio system - anything is better than Blows stereo
*Aluminum accents, not that bowling ball or wood grained plastic crap
*Sport seat with colored leather insert option - like the Type S A-Spec
*Wider availability of the specialty models like the A-Spec, other tuner options from the dealership like Ford did with Saleen/Steeda.

From what I heard, the manual 04 Maxima does 0-60 in about 6.3 to 6.4 seconds. This is a huge disappointment considering what the older manuals used to do. Wonder what the new Maxima weighs.

The car just keeps gaining weight like most new cars and alot of new cars are slower than their older counterparts.
