Me too, and it scares the shit out of me.
Also, sometimes I won't be paying attention and forget that I do have it in SS mode and take it slowly all the way to red line from a stop.

hmm sorry if this is a dumb question, but i guess its a lil common sense.

would using manual shiftmode and shifting at low rpm's improve ur gas mileage?

i mean on a manual car it would, so would it be the same? i actually think its a good question now.

I've also done it, and what's worse is my girl was in the car with me...she was like, what was that. Good thing we've been together almost 2 years so I wasn't embarrased.

I don't think it would make much of a difference. I know when I am in SS mode, I drive more aggresively...that definitely makes a difference.

Yes downshifting without actual need to- does put wear on guess what-lets say ot together--- the clutch packs-

how do you think this all works anyway? Clutches still have to engage and disengage like a manual trans- its just done with belts instead of a pedal and each gear gets clutche(s)- tiny thin undersized for how we drive....
Do it when you need to for spirited driving- otherwise leave it in D5

Driving in SS to save gas- you are not going to outthink the computer and the sensors.
Most of the time you forget you are in 3 or 4th on the freeway

Just drive gently- like grandma is with you, especially off the stop, then once over 30 you can accellerate faster- objects in motion---Newtons Laws--- bueller? --anyone?
