magnetic oil drain plugs

Anyone using an magnetic oil drain plug on here?

Are these useful in any way?

OR

Are they a complete waste of money?

Of course. It'll keep all the metal shavings, if any from circulating back through your engine. The sump filter usually won't block all of the tiny stuff.

I got `stick like` magnets at harbor freight- $1 each, and slap 2 on the outside of the oil filter
They are made to be used inside the filter but are too long for the TL

Everything you can do will help- including run a cleaner like seafoam thru the oil before change- the sludge on tv is real~

but now if you had some serious issues with your engine, they might help, but the best thing you can do for your engine is change your oil every 3,000 miles and put in quality oil (valvoline, castrol, etc) with a quality filter (especially one that has a antidrain back valve in it, so it builds pressure faster)

for the average driver- the TL is set up to go 7500 between changes, thats why the oil minder is set for 7500,,starting at about 6500 till you reset it

Extreme temps or driving style, lots of short trips.. do merit changing sooner
get an oil analysis done and see what you can be doing for oil life and exactly what metal bits are in the oil- all parts wear and certain amounts are expected- while others indicate trouble in the works

Its my opinion that car makers and oil makers are in colusion and the standard is set at 7500-so oil is made to last 8000 then certain needed additives wear out

the average driver should follow the severe maintence scheadle, especially with stop and go traffic (cause they would fit the descripton very well)

I too throw a 2 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch magnet onto the side of the filter...They are a few cents at radioshack, so I guess it can't hurt. I check every once in a while, if it falls off which has yet to happen, I will put another one on.

Oh please. 3k is way to often and a waste of money. My car would idle all day with tons of fast stop and go. If that wasnt severe i dont know what was. i went 8k on average (with regular oil) and the oil life was fine (had oil tested)

then why did my engine not have the brown tint (looked brand new with oil just on it) on the front bank when i just adjusted the valves at 104k (pictures through oil fill); back had some brown tint due to running hotter being at the back of the engine compartment

btw : that was the first time the valve covers have been off since new/built over 6 years ago and i am not taking them off again just for pictures

YOu can also add a little bit of any ATF every other oil change OR a few (hundred) miles before oil change. Its a great degreaser and lubricant.

Mine look the same with 110K miles and 7500K oil changes. Honda says 7500k, what is your reason for not trusting them on that? Have you run your oil to 7500k and have issues?

Might have to try the magnet trick. I just did an oil change yesterday, and was also curious about a magnetic drain plug.

I use 5w-30 Mobil 1 Syn + NAPA Gold (Wix) filter.

because 5W-30 offers better protection
and the biggest reason why honda specced 5W-20 was to squeeze out that last bit of mileage (and less emissions) when they did the EPA testing and fuel economy testing

in reality- the engine oil has a nice big filter thats replaced every time, so it should be catching all the metal particles

the trans uses a magnetic plug because it doesnt have the same type filter system, so a magnet holds whatever comes past it instead

on the old chevy truck filter it fits inside like the pic, so thats where I ran it with no issues

The TL filter is shorter than the magnet and wont fit inside fully without snapping in half--which is easy to do but leaves a rough edge--does breaking it affect the magnet?- I dont know-
So they now go on the outside of the filter at full length
No problem with falling off- also use them on the bike (which happens to use a TL filter)
and gets a lot more road debris damage potential and bumps trying to throw it off

In theory they should be working thru the can- at least we can feel that we are going the extra step
Just like you dont need synthetic oil but it makes you feel better

i would say thru-can one's are proably not as effective, because they have a greater distace to attract metal particles, and will attract to the filter itself housing first, but if it is has sufficent strength it should still attract metal particles

but the funny thing is there are alot non-ferrios (exp. aluminuim ) metals in engines now a days, so maybe not as effective now, then back in the day, (crankshaft, rods, oil pump, cams, rockers ,springs, etc., etc. are still ferrious though), so a quality filter is still a must

Hmm..I'm liking this magnet idea for the tranny filter. Help that little plug magnet out some cuz I can't imagine such a small magnetic area is catching everything. Thanks for the idea guys!!

What if you put some of those magnets on the bottom of the oil pan?

yes you can do that too, but you want the stuff to drain out so remove it before oil change

A filter of any decent quality- meaning more than a roll of toilet paper in a can-
is catching the particles--or acura would use a magnetic drain plug
There is still wear on parts that will be attracted to a magnet- and if its captured in the can to its inner edge- thats cool by me

My concern on using a broken-to-fit magnet was adding micro particles from its rough edge into the system- creating a problem where none existed

And I would slide the magnets to the drain plug, then removing them. That way you'll get the particles closer to the drain to be flushed out.

So why not just use a magnetic plug where you can clean it at the time of the oil change... I haven't put one in mine - yet.

people were throwing out alternatives if you want a mag plug and cant find one

I believe its better to use something on the filter rather than trapping crud in the oil pan where the pickup tube assembly is located,,of course this is extra protectoin- not really an issue, but for the type of person that likes to safety wire..

but needed on something like an aircraft where you can't just pull over to the side of the road like a car

and now you can get some veteran license plates if kentucky gots any

but for 01tl4tl it kinda sounds like he only does it on his car or something,
where you did it day in and day out for 6 or more months at a time, so yeah you get tired of it real fast,
anyways thanks for serving

of course it's needed on aircraft, especially on the one i worked on, propeller driven aircraft is majorly subceptible to vibration which can loosen parts so yes safety wire is good, but i say it's ghey because in my four years, i still never managed to get proficient at safety wire

kentucky has veteran's license plates, but they also had active duty license plates too, but i didn't want to drive around hampton roads virginia (everyone hates people in the military there) with plates that said i was who i was.

i'm sure 01tl4tl was just kidding about safety wiring the oil plug.

I was kidding and meant in general --- the type of person who would safety wire everything,, also runs a magnet of some kind~
Its trick but not needed

I do own 3 sets of safety wire pliers and have worked on many race cars and aircraft where the oil filter loosening is a real issue, or loss of oil plug is disasterous

Now I do it just to freak out the neighbors,,wear a white lab coat working under the hood- stethascope etc lol
