M7WA transmission in the shop

We have a 2000 TL with the typical 3rd gear clutch pack problem here in the shop. We're putting in updated steels and OEM clutches. There was also evidence of slippage in the 4th and 5th gear clutch packs as well - but nothing like 3rd gear.

I've got to say that I might be somewhat modifying my opinion on the external spin-on filter on top of the unit. We took this filter out and tried to back flush it to see how much crud was in there. TONS of crap came out of this filter. It was just about clogged. The screens inside the valve body were also completely clogged as well. These screens are conical in appearance, and when they get clogged, the clog is forced against the screen with such force as to actually reverse the shape of the screen - it's now a bowl instead of a cone.

Now granted, this unit had already failed, so we're in a bit of chicken and egg quandary here as to what caused it. This unit has 140k miles on it.

Total bill: $2195
Warranty: 12 months / 12,000 miles

I will post pics of the 3rd gear clutches & steels tonight. Sorry - didn't think to get more pics until now. The unit's already reassembled and going in just after lunch.

Sweet. Mine that failed the 4th and 5th looked like new(trans had only like under 50k), but 3rd was beyond toast and 2nd has some signs of wear (probably form it down shifting to it under such force)

Also why is it you think they made 3rd smaller than the rest?
