Post Low quality Paint

I already have 2 small chips in my paint, one on the hood and one on the back fender. The paint seems to chip very easily and i'm really dissapointed. Anyone else notice this too?

Yeah. Dropped my briefcase "lightly" on the bumper and had 4 little gouges that were black underneath the silver paint. Bad news. And worse than that, the touch-up paint made it look even worse since the spots are now even bigger and the metallic paint doesn't really blend with the touch up metallic.

Noticed the first day I washed it. There was a "orange peel effect" on the lower panel just below the passanger door. Also several paint runs. The best way I can describe it is if you left the paint gun in one spot for too long.

Dealer said they never saw anything like it. They took it right away to the body shop, to have the panel re-sprayed.

I have 2 or 3 small chips on the front of my new TL-type S. My color is wdp and I agree the paint chips easily. I travel I 35 roundtrip about 60 miles a day. My Comaro Z-28 had a 128k miles and the paint held up much better than my Acura.

I also have a chip on the hood of my silver TLS. I got it within the first 2-3 weeks I had it. I remember reading something about Acura's "revolutionary" paint system. I can't remember what was so special about it, but one thing I do remember is them saying that there is a very thin layer of paint over the metal. They seemed very proud of how they could use such a thin layer of paint, but it seems to me that might be the reason it chips so easily.

I had the same problem with my '00 TL. Within the first 2 months, I got a chip on the hood. After being bummed out for awhile, I just touched it up and carried on and it never happened again. I guess I can't have a new car for more than a month or two without something happening. I have NEVER owned a vehicle that did not get a windshied chip within the first 6 months, so I am just waiting for it to happen to my new TLS.

The paint on my DEP is near excellent. There are a couple of very tiny bumps under the paint where it looks like a small particle got trapped while it was being painted. Otherwise, no chips in the paint. With love bug season here in Florida, I have to literally "scrape" them off of the front bumper and the paint still looks good as new.

I have the paint sealant (no I didn't pay for it - my dealer throws it in on every car) and I'm pretty sure the warranty does not cover chips.

TLs have a 2 coat, 1 bake process for paint. That is for all colors. I would imagine that a silver car wouldn't show the chips as easily, but it's the same process for the paint. Yes, this is a very cheap paint job. I've heard of some cars that have a 5 coat, 4 bake process. That will be bulletproof. My Subaru had seemingly bulletproof paint. The 00 TL I traded in had 7 chips on the front, 3 showing rust. I never bothered to repair any of them. When I got the Type-S, I had them throw in a full nose mask to help alleviate the chipping and those genetically engineered "love bugs" whose splattered remains eat through paint!! If you don't want to deal with a traditional bra, the clear bra is a great way to go...

Oh yeah, there's a product on the market that smooths the rough look of touch-up paint. I don't remember the name of it, but you can find it in some old posts in the TL discussion forum.

Hey, I just had a thought! If we all start *****ing about the paint quality, maybe they will repaint the cars any color we like! That will solve the problem of the people who want the Aegean Blue with the Parchment Interior. If you have a green, white, or black with parchment you would be in business. Just a thought........or maybe they could just send us a portion of the purchase price back in the event we have to get the car repainted in a couple of years.

My silver tls has a horrid paint job. It got hit by mud between the fogs on the lip and from the looks of it the bumper hasnt been primed at all.

My silver paint is smooth and lustrous.

There is no wax that will protect against a rock chip.

Thnik about the physics - it is a force over area effect - a tiny area of reasonably high mass moving at relatively high velocity strikes a hard surface with a relatively soft covering (the paint). Something has got to give - it does - it is a chip.
