Loud idling noise
I have an 02 TL-S, 800 miles on it...and it's idles loud...not just a constant hum like I like...but a chunk chunk chunk...one that I didn't notice before and I didn't think would be coming from such a nice car. Guys, is this normal? Or should I take it in?

I heard it while I was on my way in to Mailboxes Etc, I was outside the car. I was in too much of a hurry to pop the hood but I'll do that tomorrow and tell you guys where the sound is coming from. It sure didn't sound like the AC but well...I hope it is. If it is I've never heard AC do that...sounds awful.
While I'm at it...when I first get in the car and put it in reverse, I start driving backwards out of my parking space and it feels like something is pushing down on the wheels for a minute. Now I've had ABS on the other car I owned, and it did do self tests...and I even posted to another guy that was probably what it was...but it sure is pronounced, and not only that but it only does it after I've been moving in reverse for abotu 2 seconds....not just sitting there. That is what it is right?

That does not sound normal for the A/C on a car this new. The A/C compressor should hum while engaged and click once during engagement. The electric fans are usually the loudest of all, especially the fan for the A/C condensor. Again, only a hum, but louder and only from outside the car. A continuous rattle sounds like a bearing.
Just thinking out loud. Need more info....
If you are close to the dealer you should probably pay their service dept an impromptu visit just to be safe.

It's not the AC...I turned the AC off and the same noise was there...albeit a little quieter...but still VERY noticeable. I am going to have to take my car in anyway to get them to look at a deep gouge in my front hood...two actually one next to the other, all the way down to the metal. I just noticed it today...they're both about 1/8" long. Looks like a vampire bat took a bite out of my hood. Anyway so I'm taking the car in for that so I'll get them to look at it....ARGH!

Austin519,
I had this exact same problem when my car hit 1,200 miles. I took my car to the dealer and they immediately pin point this to the idler pulley. They replaced the pulley and the sound disappeared completely. When you take your car in, you might want to mentioned the idler pulley to them....good luck!

Anyway, I plan to keep an eye (ear) on the situation and bring it back if it gets worse/returns.
