Is it normal to sometimes hear a crack sounds when I put the car in reverse? I hope tranny is not failing....please help..thanks

I hear that same sound everytime i back into my driveway. I try to be all nice a quiet and putt putt up the street, and then pop it into reverse and CHINK!

 

hey scottt, i have a 99 with no warranty..are you hinting that it's the transmission?

 

I have the same problem. It's normal. It's the sh1tty design.

Count me in on this problem too heh i hear this nasty clunk every time i go to Reverse from Drive it drives me crazy every time i hear it .if only i can get a decent warranty i would be relieved

 

Mine totally makes that loud "CRACK!!" sound when I go forward to reverse, and vise-versa. So far it has driven fine though. Just waiting for it to catastrophically fail on me though...

 

It's normal. The gears aren't synched up. The loud crack you here is the tranny gears engaging. It's definitely poorly designed.

I know what you guys are talking about... But heres the thing... If your moving at all, even in the slightest and you go from D to R, you will hear the crack. If your tottaly stopped, you will hear the normal sound. the CLUNK from R to D is pissing me off though.

count me in too but i think its the transmission mount cause the gear shift aint bad at all on mine and yeah i hear the sound when i hit reverse on my way to park from drive

 

I hear a 'clunk" --same thing? And it is when my car is parked on the driveway, on an incline...and I am going from P to reverse to back out of the driveway...

 

yea, the "clunk" and "crack"....same noise...it's annoying..
