Let a friend drive the car and she asks....

What does the 1, 2, 3 mean on the dashboard?

Turns out she as driving the whole way (20 mile trip, mostly high way) in manual mode.

It's my fault because I didn't warn her about it but my question is this.

I know that 1st and 2nd gear shift on their own but she said it never went past 3, and she said the fastest she drove was 65 on the high way.

Do you guys know at what RPM it shifts at from 2 to 3 if the driver does not do so?

I'm hoping it will shift before or at the redline, and not at 8K RPM

Btw, I just hit 120K on my Acura on the originally tranny. Let's hope this doesn't cause any aftermath!

in sportshift the car will shift to 2nd for u. then in 2nd, it will not shift to 3rd, it will just bounce off the rev limiter which is at tbaout 70-75 mph i think. ur tranny should be fine, unless she was shiftin from 3-2-3-2-3-2 constantly when on the highway. if anything was harmed, it would be the engine but it should be perfectly fine.

yeah everything should be fine...when i use sportshift, i usually shift out of 3rd at around 60-65 mph, and have even taken it to 75-80mph, so there shouldn't be any problems....i got my tranny replaced at 75K though.

3rd gear would be around 3-4 rpm, for a 4 spd, for me it was like 3700 rpm...it did no dmg...

rofl i know exactly what she did tho, shift it into the 5th gear spot, then pushed it over thinkin its now in gear rofl.

None of you TL-P owners are going any faster than MAYBE 65mph (probably more like 62) in 2nd. That would be rev-limiter city. I have no idea about the TL-S.

But I do know that SportShift will not shift 2-3 on its own, only 3-2 to prevent bogging or stalling. If she was in 3rd, she had to have shifted it herself. One would think that there would be no one dumb enough to drive a car bouncing off a rev-limiter for 20 miles, even if the person knew nothing about cars.

Girl or not I don't let anyone drive my car. My wife is actually afraid to drive it... she doesn't want anything to happen to it while she's behind the wheel.

Kinda like it that way.

Had to drive another car home for somebody and I didn't feel like driving back for my ride.

I told her put it in D5 to drive and she did but then pushed it over obviously. She said that she saw 1, 2, 3 change on their own, she did nothing.

What I am trying to ask is that, at what RPM would the car shift from 2 to 3, assuming the car is designed with some preventative measures against absent minded people.

I know the car shifts from 1st to second. If she said it got up to 3 on its own then it must have shifted from 2nd to 3rd for her. At what RPM would this happen? I didn't want to try it out to find out.

damn, I was hoping this was gonna be some wild story with a title like that.....

But yeah your tranny should be fine. I'm sure it'd be a lot worse if you floored it daily in sport shift mode.

I have a buddy that did the same thing.. was using the manual shifting to get on the highway and left it in manual the whole time.. wasnt quite 20 miles but close. The tranny will upshift to protect itself to 3rd and then the rev limiter will kick in and the gear indicator will flash.. but the engine will not allow to redline for extended driving..

You've got to be deaf and dumb to not notice that the car is bouncing off the rev-limiter in 2nd gear.

In my experience, and from everything I have ever read about the Acura TL (including all official info) the car will not shift itself past 2nd even in extreme situations.

I didn't want to floor myself in 2nd gear to see if the car would shift itself into 3rd at a certain RPM to prevent damage, but she did say that she saw 1, 2 and 3 on the dashboard without her touching anything.

Next time I will make sure to specify what I really mean by putting it in D5. Lesson learned.

There was a woman that drove her 2nd Gen TL in Sport Mode-2nd gear max-for about 30k miles straight, until she blew the bottom end off of the motor.

I have a 99 TL and the car will NOT shift from 2nd to 3rd by itself! In the 4-speed, we can hold 1st with out the car shifting to 2nd automatically.

My transmission is dying, so what the hell.. I tried it, for a short period of time. The car WILL NOT shift to 3rd. It will bounce off the rev-limiter for as long as I'm willing to endure the pain and bear listening and feeling it. Anyone oblivious enough not to notice this should have their licenses immediately and permanently revoked, and be placed in a padded room free from sharp objects. I mean, honestly.. I know there are some women out there that, if you ask them what kind of car they have they'll respond "Blue" or "Black" but I believe even they would know something was very wrong, and at the minimum, pull over and turn on the hazards and call for help.

Edit: She said she saw 1 2 and 3 on the dash. However, her credibility is squat since she was driving at the rev-limiter to begin with. Are we sure she can count to 3? One has to wonder..

lol . I just know that the car seems fine so I'm not too worried about it anymore. It was a weird situation altogether so I don't want to bother with details.

03CoupeV6 - What was the fastest you drove in 2nd gear?

2nd gear redlines right around 60mph (62ish, it seems) and the rev-limiter promptly steps in around 62-65MPH. So, that's how fast I drove. For about a mile. If the car would just shift-up, seems there'd be little need for the rev-limiter.

If there's a next time... just tell 'em to use D4.

Where the transmission only shifts between 1 and 4, and does not use 5th gear.
