legality of exhaust
tried a search but couldn't find what im lookin for....
i want to buy the comptech exhaust but am worried about fix it tickets... (just got one for my tint). I dont want to drop $600+ and then have to rip it off to show the cops.
Does anyone have the regulation in california, I THINK that it might be 80 decibels
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/ca...odesection=veh
But what i then need is something from Comptech saying that my exhaust is under 80, whether silenced or regular. Anyone know how to get something like this?
SHould i just have my dealer silence them as soon as he installs the exhaust? but then why even get it if its going to be silenced? i guess the question is, does it sound like my exhaust has B@lls with the silencer?
thanks

Well, they are not obnoxiously loud... so you should be fine. I would just call Comptech and ask them what the DB reading on the exhaust is. I'm sure they'll have it. If it's below 80... I'm sure they'll send you something in writing. If it's not... buy the silencers and you'll be all set....

called them today... they said "its under 95 db" he wasnt sure exactly what the reading was..
also he said that there is some type of "certificate" saying that it is legal in kali.. does anyone who have this exhaust know what he's talking about? what exactly does this certificate say?
thanks

sometimes it doesn't matter if your exhaust is "95 db" or lower and have the right paperwork to show them, the pig could still give you a ticket for a modified exhaust...I've gotten two tickets before for that bs...once when i was parked with the engine off. but i don't think the tl is a ticket magnet either...

iliveinapathy--80db limit applies to vehicles sold as new; this is most likely why you don't see a TL/TL-S sold as brand new with a current-model CT exhaust installed on it.
As far as tickets for modified exhaust are concerned--CVC 27150a covers exhaust systems that emit excessive or unusual noise. I can see CHP using the "unusual" noise guideline to give out such tickets. Also, there is CVC 27151a, which governs exhaust systems that emit sound levels greater than 95dbA or don't follow the guidelines of CVC 27150a (mentioned above). I believe CHP would measure sound level from a distance of 50 ft; CVC doesn't explicitly mention (or at least I couldn't find it) as to how many RPM the reading should be taken at.
Bottom line--as long as your exhaust is low-key in appearance and doesn't emit that distinctive fart-sound commone to just about every other aftermarket exhaust, more often than not CHP won't hassle you...unless of course your car has some other mod that attracts his/her eye.

ok...well, I wouldn't stress too much about exhaust legality..unless you were in cali, then that is a whole another story. I guess, I'm just saying all this to be a POST Whore...don't even know what I'm talking about, so forgive me if I sound absurd or ignorant...hahahaha ok then...I just know that the sound of an exhaust has to be under 95db and thats it.

so nobody has ever got any type of thing in writing from comptech? i guess the guy there was just BSing me. oh also.. the silencers only bring it down a couple dbs.... nothing substantial, (from what i read) but even if you do say F@#K the cops... you'll be sayin it louder when you gotta pay 100 bucks to rip off the comptechs and put the stock ones back on....

its illegal to modify your exhuast in cali....those legal papers saying that they are legal only means it for passing smog.. but then again....if your car doesnt look like a gangsta mobile and yoru exhuast isnt yelling for the cops....then it would be ok.... ive written people for greddy exhuasts....they were crying about "its lega..its legal " i just tell em... "press hard, it's four copies"
