taking it out is the part that I am asking about... I haven't looked yet but is it relatively simple? I mean if I go outside and look at it I should be able to figure it out eh?

this is where kris needs to step in and show you how to dismantle the steering column.

I'll make a DIY for this later today. I did mine a few weeks ago, it's pretty simple. The steering column doesn't need to be removed, just the cover, 3 screws for the bottom cover, just pull the top cover off. There are 4 screws, 2 of them tricky to remove, on the ignition/immobilizer. There are a couple of wire harnesses that need to be unplugged then it just comes apart and replacing the LED is easy, but you need a PLCC-2 LED, you can't use a 3mm.

^Yeah, that's the one I used, but they specify only 2 screws and there are 4. I'll post some pics later, I'm about to go to a movie. As for the PLCC-2 LEDs, I've never seen them for sale in any store, I always order mine from http://www.oznium.com/plcc-2. One other thing about them, they are tiny and you have to be pretty careful with them and the immoblizer unit when changing it out. And one of the wiring harnesses that needs to be removed has a gray plastic stopper in it that needs to be removed or else it won't come out and you'll break shit in the process. It's pretty obvious when you're looking at it.

OK, here are some pics of how to get to and remove the immobilizer ring that contains the green LED that lights up the keyhole. I've circled the screws in red, I don't have a photo editing program right now just MS Paint, so the circles are a little thin.

First pop off the top cover of the steering column, just pull up and it comes off.

Next, remove the 3 screw holding the bottom cover of the steering column, shown in this pic.

The bottom cover should swing down when all screws are removed and the height adjuster is pushed down.

This pic shows 2 of the screws that need to be removed from the immobilizer ring.

This pic shows 1 more to be removed from the backside.

This pic shows the gray plastic clip that needs to be removed from the wire harness before it can be unclipped, there is another green harness below it that needs to be unplugged as well but it does not have this plastic stopper in it. The other red circle next to the wire harness shows the approximate position of the last screw, I left mine out because it is such a pain in the ass to remove. You really need a socket with a 6" extension and phillips screwdriver head to get it out. If you feel around that area you should be able to find it, it's best to lay under the column looking up to get it out.

After this it should just slide right out and then you can follow the rest of the directions from here http://www.ledautomotive.com/HowToGu...yholeHowTo.asp to change out the LED. The notch in the corner of the PLCC-2 LED is the negative side.

Sorry about the crappy circles in the pics, I'm going to go find a copy of Photoshop to download. Hope this helps.

btw, on the left side of mspaint you'll see a box with 5 horizontal lines in it ascending in thickness. Use those to make the lines/circles/pencil/squares thicker and more visible!!

It does look nice blue instead of green, it's a pain to get to but I find it worthwhile.

If none of you have worked with PLCC-2 LEDs before, here's a pic that should give a good frame of reference as to how small they are, I think there are 10 in the package in the pic.
