Led Dome Brightness

Disclaimer: I have done some searching for this over the past couple days, and have not found an answer to this question. If I missed it, my bad, but I tried.

ANYWAYS, Tec Toyz is selling a complete set of LEDs for our interior (Map, Dome, Courtesy) on eBay, (yes I know no links, sorry guys), and I noticed that his dome light only has 6 LEDs. Autolumination has LEDs for the dome light with 9 LEDs.

The question is, does anyone have any comparison info or input into the matter?

Note: I have looked into Polarg via posts on this site and have not gotten a definitive answer regarding the whole fitment/melting situation.

To summarize:

1. Autolumination has 9-LED Dome LEDs
2. LedAutomotive has 6-LED Domes
3. Tec Toyz on ebay has 6-LED domes
4. Polarg Dome lights are....(fill in the blanks for me. I'm somewhat fuzzy here)

Recommendations/comparisons on brightness, and more info regarding Polarg lights as a whole.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks demo!

I'm definitely gonna get some of the 9 LED maps, and I want to get some 9 LED door lights, but I noticed you only got the 6 pack.

Is this because the 9 LED bulbs are 32mm in depth and the 6 LEDs are 22mm in depth? I can't imagine you wanting less light from that spot if you had a choice.

I'm looking at the 9 LED festoon bulb on Autolumination.com (for those of you who care to take a gander) and it looks like the best choice so far. I want a blue dome light, and they offer a 9 LED/blue configuration, which this (really cheap and kickass) guy on eBay does not.

Any more input on the dome light people?

P.S. thanks again demo!

The 9LED bulbs in the courtesy and map lights are brighter than stock. The 9LED in the dome are still a bit dim compared with the stock ones. If you want the brightest, stick with bulbs for the dome. I got all mine from superlumination.com, which is probably the same guy as autolumination.com.

off topic, but related. Headlights, at least the 9004s, from that site suck because the high beams blew immediately the first time I turned them on. Also, the 1156/1157 "superwhite" bulbs are "slightly blue". He used to have the best superwhite 1156/1157s, but I guess he ran out of those.

the thing that makes the bulbs look less bright then oem is that leds are like little spot lights. so light is shined down not around 360 degrees around the bulb. so you have to keep that in mind. the 9 led bulbs that i got fit perfectly in the map lights the leds almost rest right on the plastic cover. the 6 leds in the doors is pretty bright. i don't have any complaints with how bright they were.

just because the guy on ebay doesn't have them in his for sale he has tons of stuff i would shoot him an email and ask him.

im gonna go take some pics when i empty my car out from skiing. i'll post them up later

yea taking pics is kinda hard.

but this is what i took. prob not gonna help one bit but i will post them any ways.

like i said i had the 6 and 9 side by side in the maplights and the 9 put out alot more light. i bet with blue you will notice a different affect and it won't make it bright as white would. there was some one who put a bunch of leds in his dome light he made it him self and it was REALLY bright. I forgot his name but he was telling me how to do it. If you want bright i would go that route.

I bought the led's from Tech Boy on ebay. If your going with blue, definitely get 9 led's or higher. I have blue for the dome (4 led), maps (6 led), and courtesy (6 led). It's very difficult to read with the blue. It looks great but if you need to look for something, better off getting bright white! The dome at 4 led's is very dim.

They are bright, brighter than stock, but the illumination is more narrow on the LEDs so stock bulbs will give you more illumination.

mad propz on the custom LEDs on the circuit boards in the map lights. I stuck with the LED bulbs for the TL mainly cuz there were LED bulbs that fit. With my other car, it was a funky bulb so I did the same thing as you with the LEDs on the circuit board. It's nice to see someone else who likes to solder.

I'm running 150 ohms resistors for 3 white LEDs. My white LEDs are typical of white/blue LEDs with forward voltage of 3V and current of 20mA. Check the specs of your LEDs to make sure they're the same (eg: my reds are ~2V so I used 4 reds with 150ohms). If you wanna wire just one white LED, then use a 470 ohm resistor. Also, if you can't find 150/470 ohm resistors, you can just buy the next size up, it doesn't matter as long as you don't get 1000+ ohm resistors, which would make the LED dimmer.

If you look closely at the LED, one lead is longer than the other. The shorter one is NEGATIVE. Alternately, if you look inside the LED, you'll see a small triangle and a bigger "bowl". The "bowl" is the NEGATIVE. To wire the LEDs, solder the short lead from one LED to the long lead of another and so on until you have a line of 3 LEDs. Then, solder the resistor onto the last positive lead (although the negative lead will work as well). Lastly, connect the last short lead to - and the other end of the resistor to +.

Schematically:
LED: short lead/bowl (-) --|>|-- long lead/triangle (+)
Wiring: negative wire--|>|--|>|--|>|--- resistor --- positive wire

Is there any soldering required for the install of these led lights for teh dome, map, door, and cortesy lights? Or is this a plug in and play install?

Thanks

I got mine from www.besthongkong.com or ebay from besthongkong. The advantage of getting it from his website is that you can buy resistors and circuit boards for pretty cheap. Just be aware that he charges higher shipping to offset low prices. Another place is oznium.com - Phil the owner has super customer service.

Also be sure to get plenty of extras. You never know if you're gonna go crazy later on and do the maps and doors so you'll want plenty of extra LEDs so the colors match. Or if you accidentally screw up like me and have to rewire with spares.
